Post subject:  Skidplates (I searched extensively)

I searched pretty extensively here, but couldn't find any significant information on the quality of the stock skid plates on the CRD. I've got an 06 with the factory skids, and wanted to know if they are up to a decent level of protection or if there are some that are weaker and need to be upgraded..

Much appreciated.

Mine did not come with them and only a thin metal skid on the front. I purchased a set from a sponser and they have gotten me through everything I have put it through.

Skid Row Skid Plates for me. Things are like armor. Have for them for the engine/trans and one for the fuel tank.
Stock is good for stock, but these have taken everything I have given them.

The factory skids have been fine for me. They are fairly thick steel, and the tranny skid is even ribbed for a little more strength. I've offroaded them with zero issues. Best of all, they are cheap. You can buy multiple sets of factory skids for the ridiculous prices they charge for those aftermarket skids. I would only recommend something other than factory skids if you do rock crawling.

The quality of the stock CRD skid plate (engine only) - was bad - they were thinner than the plates used on the earlier Gassers - or later replacements.

and new style replacement is thicker - but Skid row is a lot better.

Engine, tranny, transfer case, gas tank - aftermarkets are stronger - but it does depend on what you intent to do - for mild trails Jeep versions are fine - for Moab - aftermarket because the Jeep ones will be bent (and for the tranny - bent enough to damage the transmission oil pan).

Mine looked like that - on JL Rockies's - his bent & dumped the oil filter.

Boiler makes aluminum skid plates.
Also there are choices in the fabrication section that will work for our CRDs.
Since I have an extra deep PML pan, the factory skid plat will not work for the trans.
Since off road for me for now is construction sites, I have time.

Asfir 4x4 makes an aluminum front skid and transmission/transfer case skid. I have them. They are made for the CRD in Europe but fit the US models. Just need to drill 2 extra holes to bolt up. They didn't realize there is a difference in mounting when I emailed pictures of the problem.

SkidRow plates are very nice, the front skid will net you alot more clearance then the OE skid will and is twice as thick.I would pass on there gas tank skid as it hangs very low but there is not much choice anymore.Kilby used to make the best gas tank skid for the KJ but has shut there doors.

I can tell you the SkidRow plates will take a beating and last under heavy use on the rocks................

Stock skids would have left me stranded and have a several thousand dollar repair bill,my KJ would have been totalled with aluminum skids.

You searched extensively and didn't come up with my story of getting stranded in MOAB during a snow storm when my MOPAR skid folded while driving on a dirt road causing my oil filter to get crushed and therefore letting all the oil leak out???

Don't even get me started on MOPAR skids.

I agree, I put on new mopar skids (mine only came with the engine) and the quality on the stock engine was a lot thinner. I am sticking with mopar skids until I bend one, then maybe go skid row. Weight and cost being my two biggest reasons.
