I noticed that the pics of the '06 models that I see have "Diesel Only" stamped on the fuel guage. Were any '05 models stamped this way? Mine shows nothing... looks just like a gasser instrument cluster.

Second question is.. will a '06 cluster work on a '05 CRD? Can you just pull a cluster from the salvage yard and pop it in?

You can but unless you have some paperwork from the dealership it is illegal as the mileage is stored in the cluster in KJ's.The cluster you pulled will display the mileage of the vehicle you got it from and can not be changed to your mileage, hence the illegal part without paperwork.

Yeah I would find a cluster with similar mileage to what I've got. In KY, as long as you don't go backwards it's never an issue.

In addition to the great reminder to others who drive it not to put anything except diesel in it... it would give me the side benefit of all the backlights working inside the cluster which I currently don't have.

I found a couple of clusters locally, but I need to know what month Jeep made the change to the new clusters, and is it definitely just a plug and play job?
