LibertyCRD's prices are a bit off... Unless you let the stealership help themselves to your wallet when you have a problem.
Fuel filters are $20 at Napa all day long.
CAC hoses, the two of them will set you back either $60 or $110 (depending on which) but if you do a SIMPLE less-than-$10 mod called the Elephant Hose Mod (EHM) then you won't need to replace them more than once. Your engine should NOT be breathing its own oil, this kills the hoses. Designed-in failure. Having the stealer replace these hoses for $500... You deserve to be robbed for not doing that job yourself! Its a 10 minute job with a screwdriver. Simple.
Just because it is a diesel does NOT mean that working on it requires a degree from Hogwarts or any magic implements. The cost of a thermostat is $100 for the stock bad design, or $140 for an upgraded design that can be replaced for $10. EGR? Don't replace it ever. Get the GDE Eco-tune and forget that the EGR even exists. Better yet, get an SEGR device for your CRD ($100) and that will completely disable the EGR from failure ever again.
Fuel price is irrelevant. Yea, gallon-to-gallon it LOOKS like it costs more... But it doesn't. There is 30% more energy in the gallon of diesel, and the engine makes better use of the fuel as well, due to better thermal efficiency. My CRD has just completed a full tank of city-only driving and got 22mpg! I will be measuring a full tank of highway-only shortly and I expect to see 26-28mpg, if not higher.
A gas engine KJ with the 3.7 can't hope to do that. My 97 Grand Cherokee (larger body, v8 engine, stock everything) only DREAMS of 20+ mpg. Highway mpg is a sad 17mpg, and probably only about 13 in town.
Diesel is better. At idle, (stoplights, etc or long duration idling) my CRD only uses one QUART per hour of idling, with the AC running and even with the parking lights on. Air / fuel ratio of 200:1 or so. A gas engine MUST maintain a 14:1 ratio all the time to be efficient and not burn up the engine... So at idle a V8 engine sucks down GALLONS per hour.
Servicing and parts availability is a concern, yes. At worst, you will be able to order the parts from the UK, they ARE available. Servicing the CRD yourself is easy, when you have help from the members and information here, and the available-for-free factory service manuals. Collectively, the knowledge and experience here exceeds ANY dealer "tech" experience by 100 fold... At least.
Need a bigger vehicle b/c you need to bring more stuff with you? A small trailer will provide MUCH more space for less cost than replacing the CRD, and you will STILL get at least 19mpg on the highway WHILE TOWING up to 7000 lbs, and have all the benefits of the CRD when not towing.
If you got the CRD for your wife... You got a good trade.
