I have a 2005 CRD and I need to add two more remotes for locking/unlocking the doors. I have only one working remote/key that came with the jeep. I followed the procedure for adding remotes in the owners manual page 28 "to program additional transmitters" but could never get into the "program mode". All of the buttons on the working remote respond correctly when depressed individually. To get into programming mode I depress and hold the unlock button for 6 seconds then I press the panic button then release both at the same time. I get no conformation tone indicating I went into programming mode. I then attempted to program each new transmitter by pressing ("lock and unlock" simultaneously and pressing any button), but I get no conformation tone and the remotes do not function. When I attempt to reprogram the working remote key it just unlocks/locks the doors acting like it never went into program mode? I would really hate to take it to the dealer for a problem like this. What am I doing wrong? Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a CRD only issue? Did they change the procedure for customer remote programming? Is it possible to turn this feature on and off? Just for added information I was able to successfully add a third transponder key with no remote using the procedure in the owners manual. |

If I add a 2005 EVIC to my liberty sport will I be able to program my remotes? Has anyone tried this? |

I think there is a limit on how many FOBs you can program to one vehicle, but I could be wrong. My 2 Jeeps have 2 keys each, I never bothered getting any extras. |

There are two kinds of keys available, chipped keys and chipped/remote keys. You need to have at least two working keys to program a third and beyond. The only other solution if you only have a single key is a dealer or a locksmith that has the appropriate programming equipment. I misplaced one of my remote keys and as soon as I found it I purchased several chipped keys to program. |

I finally found a solution to my key problem. When I purchased my 2005 CRD it only came with one key (i.e key remote combination). My local hardware store was able to make a chipped key for the CRD for $99.00 but it did not have a remote feature included. But now I had two keys, which is necessary if you want to program your own keys. I attempted to program a keyless remote using the procedure in the shop manual but this just does not work on the CRD. I also installed an EVIC with the intent to put the vehicle into program mode but the CRD does not support this even though the shop manual says it does. I then attempted to re-blade a remote/chipped key from another 2005 Jeep. This does not work because the key actually knows its for another car and would not program. I found a guy on e-b-a-y that says he can reset the key but I did not try this route. Finally I purchased a chipped key with the remote built in from e-b-a-y and had the key blade cut at the local hardware store. I was able to program it without any problems and I now have two working remote/chipped keys and one chipped key. This was all done with out any dealer support. The my dealer wanted over $300 for one key. Working out the process of adding a key to my CRD only took two months for me to discover. The users manual and shop manual were just wrong in multiple places regarding adding a key. If you need to add a key to your CRD and you want to avoid the dealer you can only add a remote/chipped key or a chipped key. The keys must be new or reset or they will not program. You can not add a separate remote, it must be part of the chipped key or it can not be programmed into the system. Also, If you only have two keys for your CRD you are walking on thin ice because if one fails you will not be able to program a new key without a visit to the dealer. Even our local locksmiths could not program a CRD key. My wife loves the new EVIC even though I was not able to use it to program my keys or remotes. |

I have a spare w/remote and one just a chipped key. Whenever a key gets misplaced I don't get nervous. |

Be very very careful buying online key blanks. No matter what many places say the 2005 and 2006 chipped keys (not the big key with the remote built in) are most definitely not the same. I speak from personal experience having ordered several keys for my 2005 and stoutdog's 2006 from a company that said the 2 vehicles used the same key. I successfully programmed 2 keys for my 2005 but the other keys would not program to the 2006. I forget the exact difference but to cut to the chase we got keys for the 2006 from a local locksmith who had the tool to do the programming as we only had 1 original key for the 2006. If you do order online be sure to do so from a company that has different part #s for the 2005 vs. 2006 key and you will probably be ok. |

I bought a couple transponder (chipped) keys off ebay. The seller listed the programming instructions. It involved having two remote keys. It appears that a maximum of four keys can be programmed to my vehicle. It's an '05 |

It's an '05 I also think I read that 4 was the limit in my owner's manual or the FSM Having two keys I bought an e-bay chipped key and programmed it for my 06 following the directions in the owners manual with no problems Remember there are some suttle differences between the 05 and 06 model years and this may be another CRD's originally came with 2 remotes. That means that only two more keys can be added If your CRD is "used" the number of keys already progammed into the car is a BIG unknown After 4 I would guess the dealer is the only recourse |

Fellas, thanks for the links. Found just the key I was looking for on an ebay auction and waiting. I did price one at the dealer a while back, but had to pass due to unavailability of lubricant. Also, it was a good suggestion to get a spare waterproof chipped only key. Never thought about that, but would be handy when out in the woods in the rain. Will look for one of those next. |

I bought a chipped/remote key off ebay. It was a genuine Jeep key. It lasted 2 months. The transponder in it died and it will no longer start the car. The remote part still works, so I sawed off the key part and bought a chipped key with no remote. I just put them both on a keyring and now have a separate key and remote. Old school style. This solution works for me, but I am still unhappy my $70 ebay key did not last. You never know what your going to get on ebay. |
