Well here I am. I've been playing for VW TDI's for much of last decade. I finally got fed up with the crap they are giving to Americans and I want my free time back. More on that to whoever asks.

Here is my dilemma, I am looking at a 06's Liberty CRD with about 65k miles locally. Is it safe to assume that no damage has been done without the EGR/CCV mod? Should the tranny be ok with stock fluid at this point? I remember reading about an ECU mod/recall for the tranny TC

Is it correct that the 05 has a 7yr/70k mile warranty, while the 06 has a 3yr/36k warranty? Do any of you recommend purchasing an extended warranty?

I don't want to buy another seemingly nice headache. I am a very capable mechanical person, but it just so happens that most of my time is taken up by another passenger vehicle traveling 17227 mph 24/7 at 360 km altitude. Any advice appreciated

I bought my 06 when it had 90k miles on it from someone who did nothing more than change the oil and drive until he started having drivability problems with it that couldn't be fixed under warranty/recall work. The only things it needed was to clean the MAF sensor, new fuel filter head, and the blower resister pack.

I did buy an 2 yr/24k mile extended warranty for it, as I wanted peace of mind in case something major did go wrong with it. But after a year, I'm planning on getting a prorated refund on the remaining time and just put the money into savings. So far it's done nothing but cost me money unnecessarily.

I believe the 7/70 warranty is a power train warranty. At least thats what I have for my 05. I also have a TDI. I have had an 09 and now a 2010. Had 28K on my 09 Jetta before trading up to the 2010 JSW. Never had a problem with either. Although like anything I have ever owed it breaks and I attempt to fix it.
As for the CRD I have had the same problems most people on this forum have had which are CAC hoses, thermostat, fan clutch, and probably something I am forgetting. Don't regret the decision to buy since I like to tool around in the garage. Strolling down the dealership for parts is the crappy part. Nothing is in stock for the CRD other than a fuel filter. Ordering online is cheaper but you have to wait it out on shipping. No big deal if it is a secondary vehicle like mine is.

Well, just my opinion and its worth what it cost but I would stay away from the CRD.

Now let me give you a little background... I had wanted one of these for awhile because we needed a 4x4 with decent mileage and the CRD fit the bill (my wife does a lot of driving). This is my second Jeep, with the first being a new 2002 Grand Cherokee Ltd H/O. We had lots of little issues with it from the get go until my wife decided to roll it one winter morning. I love the theory of Jeeps and the 4wd systems they offer. That along with the CRD was so appealing so I searched all over the nation and found a 2005 Liberty CRD Ltd with 8,500 miles and most of those towed behind a motor home. This was also a private party sale. I had done lots of research on the CRD and knew they could be temperamental but I was ready for the challenge and thought it wouldn't be too bad or at least worth the trade off.

Fast forward to today, we have 80,000 miles on it now and it is nothing but problems. It seems like every time I drive the thing it is something new. My ERG is stuck closed, the turbo lines need replaced, the thermostat looks like it is bad, the front suspension was saggy from the beginning, and the front and rear bushings are an issue. These are just the things that come to mind off hand. Heck, just look at the post that list all the things you need to do to the CRD if you just bought one!

I replaced the suspension all the way around with OME stuff and gave it the much needed 2" lift. The rear bushings are shot and need replaced. I just ordered the Hot Tune from GDE and I'm currently waiting to install it. I'm hoping it will cure my stuck EGR or at least make it a non issue. The thermostat is expensive along with the turbo lines that need replaced. In addition to all this, I recently read that I'm due to change my timing belt, which sounds like a lot of fun too.

I own the darn thing and don't want to put money into another vehicle (although I would much rather not have the headache) so I am trying to fix things as they come up. However, its never ending.

I know and understand that most vehicle's start needing some repairs about this mileage but this is just ridiculous and its been like this for a long time. I have sworn off Jeeps and possibly Chrysler all together, which makes me sad because I love my Dodge Ram and plan on keeping it too but it hasn't been easy on the wallet either.

Now putting the lift and GDE tune on the CRD are things I would have liked to have done regardless, it just sucks that the CRD is so expensive to maintain in my opinion.

I am a huge diesel lover and actually make my own biodiesel. If I could, every engine I were to buy would be a diesel but with the way the EPA is going and the very limited supply of diesel vehicle's, my options are dwindling.

Anyway, good luck with whatever decision you make. I know how it is to be in your position and if you do get a CRD, I hope it is trouble free for you. I hope I didn't ruin your day, just trying to give you some warning.

Craig

60,000 miles and nothing outside of oil changes here! I did (and the previous owner) some preventative stuff, but good luck so far.

I am not seeing all them problems?

Sport with 88K, GDE Eco tune is all I ever did to it.

LTD with 42 K, GDE Hot tune, new motor mounts, and a Euro Torque converter to handle the Hot tune and the TCM tune.

All those mods in the stickies are not at all necessary, all you have to do is turn off the EGR, and change the fluids as needed. Some people over ANAL-yse these things and that is why they have to do all those mods.

I don't reget buying mine I love it mine is a daily driver and the only vehicle i have. I have had it forma year and a half. I had to replace the battery and now my thermostat is failing. I am waiting for mark to send me one of his designs. I have had to clean the map sensor. Other than those things I only changed the oil and filters I did install a provent and get a GDE tune. So far its been a good vehicle and has not let me down. I have 56,000 miles on mine now

I Have had my 06 since new and without a doubt is one of the better units I have owned. That said, IMO I would never buy a used one or any diesel for that matter without knowing a full history on it, and even then I would be reluctant. To many are abused, hacked, had things plugged in and poured in that shouldn't, poorly maintained and generally d!cked around with. Its a roll of the dice.

I regret my purchase. It has had various check engine lights/error codes far longer than not havig any at all. Last MIL was for a glow plug and got it fixed and had clear dashboard. Vehicle sensed my contentment and threw another ABS/ESP/Traction Control failure lights at me....second time in 2 years this has happened. Now need to figure out if its another wiring problem or an easy repair of a wheel sensor.

Seriously, these are money pits if you can't fix them youself and if you can, they are TIME PITS.

I love mine overall. 56K miles. Here's what I've had go wrong:

OEM tires sucked balls
Air in fuel on a road trip--solved with lift pump
Tire pressure sensor replaced
Total of seven window regulator failures
Replaced battery last year

The only thing that nearly brought me to dump it was the window regulators which are now being replaced free with a new design by Chrysler.

I did install a SEGR and EHM.

Next upgrade is a lift then maybe a Euro TC and an exhaust rework or maybe all of those at the same time.
