So I made a couple of short trips this morning, and when I went out later in the afternoon i found out the hose for EHM had frozen.

When I pulled out into traffic the cloud of smoke was crazy huge. the smell of burn oil was very strong.

I pulled into a parking lot and started looking it over trying to figure out what was going on. when I looked at the bottom of the hose i use it was frozen.

So I used some side cutters to hack open the hose above the frozen plug, and once it's warms up a bit I'll have to re-route the hose so there isn't a place for the water to gather and freeze.

I'm glad I cought it early enough so I don't think any damage was caused, with the increased crankcase pressure it can cause seal problems.

Anyway just a warning to those with the EHM to be sure their routing doesn't hold the condensation

Put a slit in the line farther up under the hood so there's still a spot for it to breathe if the end of the line freezes.

Odd, because my EHM was dunked under water, went through snow drifts, made it through the coldest weather in decades, and didn't give me a single problem last year. And I had it hanging down so low that you could get down on your knees and see it.

I'm about to hook it up again I think. I just don't like the idea of oil mist in my intercooler and intake.

Why don't you use the provent instead?

I had my tube running back near the rear axel, it's was engulfed in ice stuck up in the underbody. I cut it back near the drivers floor board.

Going to get a prevent soon!

Why don't you use the provent instead?

A) Cost
B) Aggrevation of installation
C) Aggrevation of maintenance
D) More clutter under the hood
E) Cost
F) The EHM works perfectly and better

Well that is a long tube, no wonder it was so froze up. My Cummins had the CCV tube in front of the engine, where the fan would blow heat on it, it had a breather inside the outlet, with a tube that went up and then back down, it did not drip oil, freeze, or even smell. Maybe the fan helped to dissipate the odors?

I guess I don't completely understand why someone would want to do this mod?

It is to vent your ccv fumes to atmosphere instead of going back through your system. Where it causes problems like clogging up your MAP sensor and destroying hoses. I used copper hose and ran it straight down beside the turbo exhaust tubing no clogging problems here.

It's best not to mess around with such things as EHM and junk.

Yes, because the true enthusiast lets oil mist saturate all his hoses, intercooler, sensors, air filter, and intake and doesn't care about the repair bills down the road.

why would i want to send oil into the atmosphere? doesn't sound like a great idea.

Well first off it doesn't go into the atmosphere, it condenses in the hose.

Second, think of it this way, even the little bit of emissions that gets out into the atmosphere doesn't go into the engine, since it doesn't clog up things like the MAP(which causes lots more problems including dramatically elevated emissions), and cause boost hoses to fail(fair amount of resources go into making those and disposing of them), I could easily make the argument that the little bit of directly added crap greatly is greatly offset by the other benefits.

So the real question is, why WOULDN'T you want to do this?

Also, you should check out the noob guide:

No it didn't freeze up yet, but I don't want it to so I shortened it!

I have seen many VW TDI's blow their turbo seals due to this mod. Remove in winter is my suggestion to avoid potential problems. Oil in your intake is really not that harmful. However when it mixes with the EGR this is where t starts to block. Chiptuning is the best way to eliminate / reduce the EGR and get more power to boot!

When done properly, you will not have issues in the cold.
