Post subject:  Water Pump Removal

I have a question regarding water pump replacement.

Must the timing belt be removed in order for the water pump to be replaced?

Can the timing belt and all of its related components, remain intact and undisturbed if the water pump requires replacement?

If it does not effect t he timing belt, then I may not need to wait for the water pump to arrive. I can replace it when it fails in the future and after the 100,000 mile service has been done.

I agree that it makes sense to do all the work at the same time, but why sweat the extra cost and delay due to delivery, if the pump work can be done separately without affecting the timing belt.

2.8L DIESEL ENGINE
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ENGINE/
COOLANT - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
3. Remove timing belt inner and outer covers (Refer
to 9 - ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT /
CHAIN COVER(S) - REMOVAL).
4. Remove water pump retaining bolts and pump (4) .

3. Remove timing belt inner and outer covers.

I read that and I only see a need to remove the inner and outer covers, not the timing belt.

So the timing belt and its related parts are not affected, what am I missing?

I am afraid you are going to take the timing belt off. Here is the procedure for removing the inner cover

REMOVAL - TIMING BELT INNER COVER

Disconnect negative battery cable.
Remove engine cover.
Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
Remove accessory drive belt.
Remove cooling fan support.
Remove vibration damper.
Rotate the engine to 90 degrees ATDC.
Remove timing belt outer cover.
Remove timing belt.
Remove timing belt idler pulleys.
Using special tool VM.1085, remove camshaft sprockets (Fig. 158).
Remove timing belt tensioner
Remove timing belt inner cover retaining bolts and remove cover (Fig. 159).

Not to be picky, but I have found errors in the FSM. I would lock the cams and crank before removing the timing belt, just to be safe.

That is a must. What the FSM should state is "Remove timing belt.(See page XXX for directions)". For all of the steps listed in my previous post you need to read the individual sections in the the FSM for the proper procedure.

The reason why you have to do all this is that the water pump is driven off of the timing belt. The inner cover has to be removed so that you can access the water pump bolts, which are a pain in the :furious: to get to.
