After much back and forward between a CRD and a 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara I decided to take the high road. Never owned a d-d-d-d-d-diesel before. I usually turn my own wrenches so getting to know a new beast should be fun.

2006 CRD, leather heated seats, otherwise stock. Located Langley, BC (outer suburb Vancouver). 90,000km. I got very poor records with it so basically have to assume nothing was done. Will try and find out what recalls/TSB's were done through the dealer, but I doubt I will have much luck. 10,000kms left of powertrain warrantly in case something really bad happens.

Here we go. Thanks to the forum. The research I obtained here as pre-purchase info was invaluable.

Hi,

There's lots of reading to do here.

A tip for Boxing Day: unless the window regulators have been repaired, you might think twice before leaving anything of value in the vehicle when its parked . One or more of the windows can fall down into the door without warning.

What kind of power train warranty do you have? At least in the US the 06 model year had a 36 month /36k mile bumper to bumper warranty.
05's had a 7 year/75kmile power train warranty that was transferable to the second owner only.

First off, verify with the following link:

http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep ... dex_en.jsp

This should tell you the basic history of the vehicle's recalls (performed or not). Then, the newbie section contains a heap of valuable information about the CRD, how to maintain and what to modify/change/repair for best experience...

Enjoy!

I've already had a good look through the newbie guide - great stuff.

Canada powertrain warranty is 5 years, 100k....I was an Aug 06 delivery, so im good for another 10,000km or until Aug 2011. Having the 10k buffer is nice till I get a handle on the vehicle.

I had already searched the VIN and found no outstanding recalls. This car has been F31'd. Also F37'd i think - Cruise at 60mph is 1900RPM....bump it up to about 63-64mph and the shift happens to drop it back to 1700-1800RPM. Also has the F31 sticker under the hood. Speaking of which, my F31 sticker has dealer number 5628 which is probably in Ontario Canada. I've looked on google but cant find it - anyone have a dealer list? I'd like to see if I can get service history from them.

First off im trying to isolate a rattle that I think is exhaust. Its coming from under the car, but sounds loudest towards the back of the car. Its only present when the vehicle is stopped or almost stopped and in gear (drive or reverse) and the brakes are on so the tranny is trying to move the car. I'm waiting for my wife to find some time to sit in the car and listen while I get under there and hold/push the exhuast to see if it stops.

I also noticed at park something is switching on and off about every 10 seconds. I can hear the relay click and the RPM drops 50-100. It cycles on and off about every 10 seconds....i'd like to know what that is.

Otherwise after 150km its great to drive. Love that diesel rattle and a good turbowhine.

Most likely you have the heater on and what you hear is the AC compressor cycling. It operates that way in bi-level, floor and defrost

Found out the rattle is the rear exhaust hangar - guess it has worn and the tailpipe vibrates inside the rubber hanger. I shoved a piece of metal in there to hold things tight for testing and went for a drive - no rattle. New hanger, here I come.

Speaking of Wheelin in the PNW area......anybody know of a good school that does basic intro to 4x4 training??? Its for the lovely wife who I do give flowers to when I am under the car and its in gear.....she's an avid outdoor person - loves to get into the back country but drives a 4x4 like a....well.....girl. Me trying to teach her would be like trying to teach a teenager to drive - some things in life are worth paying for.....
