the 2.8's will do that with an air bubble in the fuel line

but we didn't have a lift pump or good fuel head - so any leaks are a problem

I'd guess - semi-clogged fuel filter - that can't support the volume of fuel while you're accelerating? -but flows enough at lower power levels?

or can your lift pump be wearing? so that it doesn't pump enough?

(and if they changed the fuel filter - make sure they tightened it)

kelticknight,

Sounds like pockets of air in the fuel line.

I am interested to know how many Kilometers are presently showing on your 2002 2.5 Litre CRD sport?

You should be able to pull OBDII codes from your Jeep by doing the ignition on/off trick....it works on my 2002 CRD!

Turn the ignition key to ON position....do not start the engine!
Turn OFF again
Repeat rapidly
On the fourth On action(if my memory serves me well) the Odometer will show you all of the recorded Error codes with the newest code shown last.

This may give us something to go on.....do you have any "pings" while this happens?
I agree that your filter may be blocked or you have air in the fuel system but I had some weird wiring problems with my Jeep at one time...for example turning on the front wipers or the aircon...panel would "ping" engine cuts out....pull over and restart the engine.

i vote for the plugged fuel filter as well cuz what you’re describing seems like the engine chokes on too much air without enough fuel (when overtaking or acc.)
if not the filter then most probably the pump

That is a good number of miles.

If you don't mind me asking, I would like to know what issues have you experienced with your CRD to date, besides the present issue you are experiencing now?

For 180,000 miles, it sounds like your CRD is faring pretty well.
