Well i have some time this weekend to dig into a sticky front brake issue that i have been dealing with some time. Fronts only. After driving for a sort period of time and using the brakes as normal then pulling into garage, jack up front end and both wheels turn hard. they will turn but very stiff. If you wait 10-15 minutes(maybe longer) they will release themselves. So far i have found stuck slider pins which i have fixed and are working properly now, replaced both calipers and bled the system With no change in symptoms. I'm looking at changing out the brake hoses this weekend. They are only $15 a piece so no big deal if they are not the problem. Just wondering if there is a way to diagnose the problem by getting them to pressure up and then breaking loose the caliper bleeder, see what happens, break the line bolt see what happens all the way to the HCU and master cylinder. ( this reminds me i also shimmed the master cylinder out with no luck). What would it mean if the pressure releases at the bleeder, line attachment to calipers, HCU, Master cylinder???? Thanks for any feedback. |

Had one side on the front not retract properly. My wife noticed a seeming loss of power and smelled something on highway. Had to be towed home as wheel locked up. Our very knowledgeable local shop indicated that they had seen this caused on Liberties by both bad calipers and internal collapse of flexible front brake lines, when warm. (Problem went away as soon as everything cooled down. Same as your situation. Both front wheels had no extra drag by the time I was able to examine it.) I had recently changed the pads and rotors and remembered that the pistons had been really hard to push back, so I suspected calipers were the cause. (I knew the sliders were good.) However, since I could not have my wife stranded again, I also replaced both front flex lines along with both calipers. Problem solved. Occured 15K ago. If you can live with trying one thing at a time and possibly being wrong, the lines are obviously much cheaper than rebuilt calipers, but you may also "cook" a rotor if you guess wrong. (If you still have the rubber sleeves on the front slider pins [strangely only one pin per side], I would DEFINITELY remove them (pack heavily with slider grease), even if they seem fine, at the moment. They expand with age and jam the pins, though that does not sound like the problem you have now.) DOC |
