Post subject:  New EGR Valve changed on the CRD poll

It seems a few of us have had our EGR valves go bad since we last reponded to the EGR valve question posted aawhile back. So in the interest of seeing more accurate statistics I am starting a new poll over. Thanks in advance for your answers.

aprox. 5500 miles and the egr valve is supposedly fine. Mine is a very late '05

9000 miles and no EGR problem.

Post subject:  14000 miles going in for my second EGR valve.

First one went out around 2-3000 miles if I remember right. Now ten thousand miles later she started running a little doggish then, WAM, CEL came on. Took to stealer and sure enough EGR is bad and of course "we don't have it in stock". I'm going to go to a little thicker oil for less blow by and I guess a CCV filter, I'm thinking that the blow by is gumming up the valve. Why can't it just vent to the air like my Cummins?

You can send a nice big thank you note to the EPA for that closed CCV setup.

I know that the GM Duramax has aftermarket kits to eliminate the EGR valve on this engine I have talked to a couple of people I know if it made any difference and 1 said he gained 1 mpg the other noticed nothing but the reason for eliminating it was for lower intake temps. thus more power. There was a problem with the stock EGR also but I can't remember what it was I will check into it some more. Maybe the company that make the kit for duramax is coming up with a CRD kit I'll research this and let you know.

Post subject:  should this issue warrant more attention

Looks like this is a very common problem. It is only speculation on my part but I think the fact we don't have low sulfer fuel yet may be a part of the problem. Does anybody know if the CRD 's in Europe or Austrilia have EGR valves? If they do and aren't having this problem it would confirm my theory on fuel as they have lvery lower sulfer fuel across the pond.

Should the kind folks at DC be installing the Pro-vent type filters at the factory and retrofitting those already sold?

7000 miles EGR replaced

Post subject:  EGR valve

I have not yet had to replace the EGR valve in my CRD. The vehicle now has 11,500 miles and has been run on dino diesel with Stanadyne Performance formula added. I also make it a point to accelerate hard from a stop and "blow out" the system once each tankful. The vehicle is a late model 2005 (build date June 2005).

Other than minor problems with "brake groan" when starting up on a cold day, the only problem I've noticed is that it seems slow to heat up when the temperatures are low. But, on the whole, it has been trouble free and runs very well.

18,500 miles and still no EGR replacement. I'm curious why some people keep getting multiple EGR replacements, and others like me have never had a single issue? And I've run #2 diesel of questionable quality through this thing from day 1. Wonder why that is? Mine was built April 2005.

47,115 miles MIL (check engine) is on  codes P0401, P0299. DC sevice center infomed it was the EGR valve bad, per the service guy it was out of warranty (EGR is only good for frist 36K) and it would cost $ 700+ to replace it. Has anyone replaced the EGR themselves?

Ordered one with gasket this morning for $205 with employee discount.

That's B.S. Pull your warranty book and read the fine print. The EGR is part of the engine/turbo/emissions stuff and on an '05 it's covered under the 7/70. You need need to speak to another dealer or start screaming higher up with DC. If necessary, take it to a Detroit Diesel dealer for repair.

If it comes down to it, my dealer couldn't get a valve for one customer. Took the old valve out, cleaned and reinstalled. Worked fine.

I don't think the EGR problem is as simple as low sulpher fuel. Because of the tighter limits on NOx here in the states, our egr flows are probably higher and the cam & injection timing is probably more retarded.

Still on my original EGR @ 11,500 miles, 6/21/05 build date.

Most of the software I've seen running electronic controlled diesels has a wide adjustment range. Would not be suprised to find that some of the re-flashes were done to loosen up on the parameters as to when a marginal EGR or anti-shudder valve starts throwing fault codes. This would have absolutly no effect on the mechanical funcion of the those valves, just how many get changed out under warranty claims.

I did pull my warranty book last night and stand corrected. The EGR is itemized as a 3/36 part but other parts (like fuel injection parts) are listed as 3/36 and also itemized as 7/70 on the diesel. I think there is a grey area to complain as the EGR is integral to this engine assembly and mounted between two covered components.

Well, mine just went today at 25K miles. Dealer doesn't even have time to read the code so I went to AutoZone. One 299 and two 299's. Which translates into turbo boost and EGR valve.

And it gets even better. I called the dealership and gave them the codes. I said since you don't have time to look at it, here are the codes. Please order and EGR and let me know when to bring it in. Nope. Won't do it without the vehicle. SO, they can't look at it for two days, at which point they'll read the codes and tell me to come back in two weeks.......... 5 Star, you bet....................

They have to go through STAR at DC to order the part.

I'm suprised it isn't covered under an emmsions warranty.

The 3/36 disclaimer on the EGR is actually in the emissions warranty. Interesting disclaimer, they start by saying EPA only requires 2/24 and words it like 3/36 is doing us a favor. You can tell it was worded from the perspective of a gasser.
