Post subject:  HELP!!! Torque converter replacement

My torque converter is shuttering AGAIN. :dead: This will be the third replacement. I know that some of you have had the same issue. What I am getting from the dealer is that they can only replace with the same junk. :furious: I have also been told that the Euro spec converter would cause a "catastrophic failure" and is not compatible. :banghead: I know this to be untrue, and need evidence to prove that it is done with success. So, this brings me to my humble request. If you have had this done under warranty, please PM me with the info of when and where, possibly work order #. If there is some documentation out there from Chrysler please post where I can find it. I'm almost out of warranty and don't want a problem down the line.

Thanks to all,

Doug

Have you tried calling Chrysler corporate and asking them? Maybe they can give this particular dealer the correct information.

I was able to talk directly to the Jeep mechanic into replacing the torque converter with a Suncoast that I supplied and paid for. You may try that route. Make sure he loctites the bolts going into the new converter.

The "Euro" tc has been the offocial replacement for the 05/06 USA for some time. I had mine replaced under warranty about a year ago and there was no problem. They looked up the part number and there it was. Also ask them if they replace the front seal while they're replacing the TC. Any mechanic worth their salt will do so and they will find that original seal is no longer available and they will need to replace the front pump with the new improved one. The original front pump was known as a possible cause of air leaks that may be part of your problem :SOMBRERO:

Thanks Joe!
Do you know if there is a service bulletin from Chrysler on this that provides part numbers etc? My converter was replaced 2x last fall. Allegedly one was defective and now the other is failing. I do not believe for one second that I was given a Euro spec converter. If you or anyone else has service bulletins from Chrysler, it would be a huge help. Because I am getting the run around and lies now!

I'm finishing up replacing my Torque Converter and Trans Oil Pump tomorrow. No significant metal was in the Trans Pan. I hope everything goes well, so I can GDE flash my ECM and get on with enjoying my Jeep!

What did that dealer do? Buy a bunch of the old style converters back in the day, figuring they were going to sell a bunch? If you are under warranty go to another dealer and be assured you are getting part# 68037142AA The letters at the end may change with revisions, but the numbers should stay the same. I am running the Hot Tune and the ECM tune on the Euro and I have never had a shutter, and it lugs like a standard.

No TSB necessary. All they have to do is to look up the part numbers :SOMBRERO: TC will have the part number for the Euro version and front seal will refer them to new front pump.
Even a blind man could find them :-)r

Maybe they are not informed. I was told it was a f370 converter? Could it be they are yanking my chain? They claim it is a "kit" for this problem. I am also getting tired of not getting return calls to set up the appointment time. Monday I'll have to go there in person, and "persuade" the service manager to my point of view.

Post subject:  Re: HELP!!! Torque converter replacement

My 2005 with 106k miles will shudder at 53-55mph (InMotion eco tune). So I took it to the dealer in January 2011 and asked them for a price on replacing the TC with the Euro TC. They told me that my current TC was "guaranteed forever" since it was replaced under the F37 recall. They called their service underwriter and confirmed that any part that was replaced under a recall is covered forever. So I scheduled an appointment to have it replaced. I told them to change the trans oil and filters while they had it so that it would have a "complete" oil change. They had to order a TC since they did not have one on hand. I asked them to order the Euro and a reman part number came up. They also looked up the F37 recall and searched for the TC part number listed on the recall. The service underwriter said that they had to order the part number that was listed on the recall. I figured that there would not be any old TC's and it would sub over to the euro.....WRONG!!!!!! The old style is still available!!!!!!!!! I pleaded, but they said there was nothing they could do when Chrysler was paying the bill.

So the day I came and I was able to look at the box that the TC came in: part number CECAF370!!!!!! The old style converter

And yes it still shudders occassionally. And it probably needs a new front pump.

My 2006 with 75k miles (InMotion hot tune) also shudders with the F37 TC. The dealer said that they will do it for free too, but I will wait until I can get the Euro installed. They have to run out of those junky TC eventually,,,, right????

Post subject:  Re: HELP!!! Torque converter replacement

I've never heard of anything being replaced under a recall being "guaranteed forever". A recall is supposed to fix the problem that caused the recall period. There may be some real or implied warranty of how long that fix will last, I just don't know. IMHO if the F-37 recall/TSB has been performed and a transmission that is covered by the regular warranty subsequently fails during the regular warranty period then the issue at hand is not redoing the F-37 that's already been done rather the issue is replacing the transmission under the regular warranty along with the applicable pump. As I recall F-37 was in 2 parts 1) detune the TCM to reduce torque in theory to prevent damage to the underdesigned stock torque convertor and 2) listen to the transmission/torque convertor under load to determine if the torque convertor needed replacement. Only in the latter case was the torque convertor replaced and if it was not replaced clearly the regular warranty still applied.

Sounds like Jay and woodtick may need to elevate the conversation above the dealer. Just my thoughts.

I'm sorry but this dealer is full of manure!!! I beg you to put your foot down, blast them and find another dealer who does not take customers for granted... or for morons! I was confronted with such bad attitude in a different situation (engine problem), now this dealer is barred for life :goink: and I make sure it is known when the occasion presents itself... Good luck!

X2 on the Substandard dealer, sounds like they need a Slurry Store System for all their BS.
Just remember a bad front pump can make any torque Converter Shudder.
Since you are on your #3 torque converter, the chances of your front pump being good are slim to say the least.
A good dealer with a smart tech may have a test to determine if the pump is good or bad.
For me lacking all the test tools or a place that could check, I took my front pump apart when I swapped my Torque Converter for a Suncoast and installed the Transgo kit, cheap insurance.

Here are your front pump options for what ever Torque Converter you go with:
1) New pump from Mopar, good luck getting it under warranty, but a good dealer will get Chrysler to pay for it.
2) Transgo Kit installed into the front pump by a good shop.
3) Sonnax repair kit that requires remachining the front pump body with a special tool.

Good Luck

Part number on the photo below

Red arrow points to the valve that goes bad due to seating on soft aluminum. Rumors are that newer pumps may have an anodized bore and seat, if anyone else knows if this rumor is true, please chime in. An anodized valve seat is better than the old stock, but both the Transgo and Sonnax fix are more heavy duty than an even anodized valve seat & anodized bore. Anodizing is chemically forced oxidation of the aluminum that puts on a thin hard surface.

Thanks Warp2,
ALLEGEDLY on replacement #2 they replaced the front pump due to a fault code (I assume low/ no pressure) but who knows if they did or why.

I guess right now I'm dealing with 2 major concerns. 1) Reliability 2) Suppressing the urge to demonstrate the difference between pink and purple.(grip pressure on throat)

Post subject:  Re: HELP!!! Torque converter replacement

Well, the saga continues. I decided that my best interests lie in going to another dealer. No rage, no manual strangulation, no court proceedings. :D I met with a new service manager and told him of my experience so far. He was open to pursuing the Euro spec converter or the Suncoast, but he needs corporate (parental) approval. Supposedly there is some big shot engineer from Chrysler that handles warranty/recall/unusual problems going to be there tomorrow. Again, my faith in Chrysler and their dealerships is not what you call rock solid. I have been promised I will be contacted tomorrow with a decision, and well, we shall see..........

As for how long the recall will warranty the converter, I have in my possession a copy of the F-37 recall papers. I asked and was told there is no end date listed. Does this mean "forever", I doubt it. However, It should last a long time yet.

Keep you all posted.

Finished the Torque Converter and Trans Oil Pump tonight. Overall went pretty smoothly, Feel a lot better about all the ATF Type4 VI and Lucas Gunk the previous owner had put in the Trans is gone, fresh Type+4, fresh filters, fresh Oil pump, and fresh TC. Just feels so much more solid of a Trans now, almost like a different application.

I think part of your problem might be calling it the "Euro spec converter". Just say that you need the current revision torque converter.
