Has anyone unhooked the EGR system on any of these? I took it to the dealer last week after CEL came on, and sure enough EGR is bad again! I need to take this on a 4 hour each way road trip coming up this weekend. Dealer said it was fine and I think so to, but, my mileage is in the toilet. If I was to disable the EGR would my MPG come back? Thanks for any replies.
This has been discussed in at least one other thread, but the gist of it is that there is no very easy way to do it. You can block the EGR tube by putting a thin piece of aluminum or steel between the flange and the EGR control valve that it attaches to on the driver's side, but that will give you a CEL and at least two codes.
The only way to do this and still "fool" the computer, IMHO, would be to actually cut the EGR pipe, plug the side that connects to the exhaust, and plumb a hose from the EGR inlet back to the air filter housing. Assuming that the sensors don't look for high temps or high CO2 content or pressure, that should work and the soot wouldn't be the cause of the EGR failure.
Now, if the EGR valves are failing because of software problems causing too much cycling (also discussed in that other thread), all bets are off. But I would have thought DC would have implemented such an easy solution already if that were the problem.
