Help me. Please.

I have a '05 Liberty CRD with 120K miles. lost power on the highway. Pulled over. Engine shivered for 30 seconds, died and never restarted.

Dealership said it needed a new fuel filter and had a "cam shaft sensor error". Replaced both, still doesn't start. They then condemned the injector pump and wanted $3,700 to replace!!! I said thank you very little and bought an OEM pump at a parts house for $1,000 and had the dealership replace it for $900 in labor. After install, it still did not work. They say the new pump is bad! It "failed the same way". They could not tell me how it failed, but said it delivered no pressure. I asked if they had checked the quantity control valve and got a blank look. I can't believe the new pump is bad out of the box. The parts house is very doubtful too but will honor the warranty if the pump is bad. Regardless, I can't keep paying these jethros to change parts until they luck out.

This is killing me. There were no fuel problems prior to this. Any clues? Anyone know of good CRD mechanic in the San Diego Area?

Google Diesel injection pump/injector/turbo repair/rebuild places and when you find one that is a member of ADS, call them and ask for recommendations for a local independent shop. Dealers have to drink the Auto company Kool Aid and buy the big price parts and follow the Kool Aid ptotocols, independents do not. In the western Chicago suburbs area, the ADS member place also does Diesel repair work. If you are a I only go to a Dealer person, you will have to give up your Sacred Cow or bend over.

Did the dealer replace just the fuel separator filter and not the fuel head?

Has anyone checked the timing belt? I wonder if it skipped a link or just broke?

If any of the injectors are stuck open to return, the rail will not build enough pressure to fire properly. Happened on mine...

Check for air in the fuel. Make sure they bled it all out. Mine does that where it will kind of start and as you said "shiver" then die. Then if i bleed it starts right up.

I think that was your queue to leave?

Thanks for all the feedback. I will ask all these questions and give the dealership one more chance to come up with answers. I found a Bosch Service Center in town that works on CRDs and are confident they can solve any problem (at nearly half the labor cost).

a quick way to make sure everything else is still working is to spray some starting fluid into the intake..DON'T USE A LOT..
just enough to make it run. if it runs its s fuel problem.

since you replaced the pump( CP3)..does it try at all? was the valve on the back of the CP3 also replaced?

I would think that as long as you don't have 4 injectors that are bad..it should fire some..not to suggest run nor run right.

-dkenny

yes it was time to leave the dealer..

Very Smart Move Congrats

There's a pretty good writeup in the tech section on checking for a no start condition. But I agree with dkenny, shoot some starting fluid into the intake and see if it starts. I also know that when I replaced the fuel rail pressure valve it was a PITA to bleed the fuel rail completely, which continued to make the truck start difficult. It took two tanks of fuel before it returned to normal.

The fact that it died on the highway makes me skeptical of a fuel problem, though.

Is there still a code for low fuel pressure?

Update on my "fuel problem":

Bad troubleshooting. Not so bad a dealership.

Towed the Liberty to the only Bosch Service Center in San Diego County. They immediately cued in on the "sound of low compression". The compression test revealed ZERO compression in #4 cylinder! Also, the injector nozzle was mashed and there were strike marks on the top of the piston. The new injector pump that dealership had condemned was verified to be at the correct pressure for that point in the start cycle.
It had taken me $2,500 and three weeks to find out my engine had cratered. I calmly contacted the Manager at the dealership. I told him the story in great detail. To my surprise he agreed to refund all but the $300 it cost to have the Bosch shop properly diagnose it.

The moral: don't trust dealerships with your CRD. they are just parts changers.

Anyone want a parts car? It's in good shape, just needs major engine work...

Sorry to hear about that.
was it a valve? glow plug?- or did the injector come apart?

(you might check some prices - Biodiesel has a good engine ~ $4500 range)
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60542

Jinstall ordered a complete new engine (he said 5K deposit - didn't say total price)

even a new engine will be cheaper than a new vehicle.

One guy got T boned in Houston, TX and his engine is still good.

I did not dig any deeper since I had sunk so much into it. Now that I have my money back, I might pull the top end off and see what I find. The Bosch Service Center said it was likely a valve, but said there seemed to be excess travel in cylinder #4 that caused the mashed injector nozzle. Could be a bottom-end problem as well.

I already replaced the vehicle with a 7-seater for my growing family. I am back to driving my Passat TDI.

Well since you through it out there what year is your CRD is it limited or sport 4x4 or 2x4? And what kind of options? Can't just let another CRD die they are becoming rarer and rarer these days.

Of course.

2005 CRD 4X4 with tow package. Black ext. and int. 119K mi. No mods. K&N Filter. Roof rack. Seats have been covered with "wetsuit" type seat covers since Day 1. Premium wheels. Used off-road maybe 5 times. All recalls are done. Has new injector pump, new radiator and hoses. Tires about 15K of wear. I'll post a photo soon. Thanks for the inquiry.

Hmmm...

This is the second reporting here on this forum where a piston had crashed into the head.
Why is this happening?
Worn rod bearing?
Bent wrist pin?
Stretched rod?

:?: :?: :?: :?:

At 119K with maybe no timing belt replacement I'd wonder about valve interference. On the other hand the impact marks could be from a broken glow plug. I may be mistaken but I seem to remember that the cylinders are lined so redoing that is not out of the question.
