Post subject:  MPG EXPERIMENT PROPOSAL

I have a sport model without an EVIC so I can't do the proposed test myself. Many here (me included) have noted that speed (especially greater than 70 mph) degrades the mpg very quickly. What I propose is that someone with an EVIC do the following:

check the instant mpg at 50/55/60/65/70/75/80 mph using the EVIC.

If the ambient temp is relatively constant and the road is level, the EVIC reading should define a mpg curve vs speed.

As I said, I can't do it myself, but am very curious as to how much speed degrades MPG

I'm also curious, but at some point DC deleted the instant mpg feature. I don't know if any KJs got it.

You just hit reset while moving and start a new average.

Wish I could. Don't have the EVIC

I'd love to get one of those EVIC's. It seems all the wiring is already there just need to get the unit. Why are they so expensive :)

Anyone know what years of EVIC will work in a 2006? (We have the sunroof if that matters).

I noticed that on mine. I liked having both the instant feature and the average mpg feature on my prior Jeeps.

It seems I get the best mpg on the highway when I'm going under 65mph. At higher speeds, my mpg starts dropping off.

I kind of already did this, see my post:

That is some fine milage. I'd like to see if anyone else gets that good. Had mine to the dealer after getting consistent poor mileage. They found nothing. very puzzling. Mine got 21.7 on the highway at 65 with my plow on the front and hasn't got that good ever since even with no trailor or plow at 65. The other day I got 14.5 at 65 with about 1 mile of it pulling our 14000# service truck down the highway and the total trip 144 miles. I only have 2387 on it. Wonder if the engine is still a little tight?

The engine is probably still a little tight but I would also guess your running the AC. Were you running the heater at all and if so what position was the knob in?

I was running heat as it has been 19 deg up here and the temp setting was about 3/4 with fan on low.

What position was the heater knob on?

I know the info is spread across about 5 different topic discussions, but which output knob setting (other than "Off") locks out the AC completely? I like running with it set on Floor/Defrost, but not at the expense of drastically reduced fuel mileage.

The 3 right most settings (Clockwise) Run the AC automatically.

Defrost
Defrost/Floor
Floor

Basically your cant keep your feet warm without using the AC. Pretty dumb...

The AC may also come on at anything other than off if the temperature outside is around 30F (at least thats how I read it)

Or you can bypass the "auto AC" function using the how-to a few us have been tinkering with :)

so does the AC do the on/off thing even when the AC button isn't pushed in?

The AC runs all the time when in those 3 modes even if the AC button is not on.

How about unplugging the compressor for the winter?

Follow that link he put up on page 1. It's pretty *cringe* simple. I'm cringing 'cause pulling plugs and messing with pins is not something I'm accustomed to on a brand new vehicle. I don't know why it worries me so...I mess with pins, plugs, and solder all the time with desktop and laptop computers...just not my vehicle.

I was just asking for the stock output settings so I could play with it until I get a chance to dive into the dashboard with duct tape and my soldering iron (better not let me fiancee see me doing THAT). I put it on dash vent and...whew!...that's a weird setting! No AC running, but the heat blasts right into your face (doesn't matter where you point the dang things in such a cozy cabin). I was doing okay with it on a low heat setting until this morning (38 degrees) when I came busting around an entrance ramp corner at 70MPH and cold fresh air came pouring in through the footwells. :? I could feel it blowing on me at the same rate that the heated air was hitting me from the dash vents. Very strange. Definitely going to do the pin tape job and get back to the Defrost/Footwell setting (that's my favorite) without AC.

The only issue with that is then the compressor wont come on at all, and it should be used like once a month at minimum to lubricate the seals and what not. I would assume this is also one of the reasons they makes it automatic now, less AC failures for them to fix.
