Recently got the GDE eco tune to solve my EGR problems, which it has for several months now. And I was very delighted to get better fuel economy as well. My last two tanks were 400 and 415 miles and it only took 19.5 gallons to fill back up. Both of these tanks were my normal daily commute 20 miles freeway 10 miles urban daily. No freeway only trips. Now my economy is back to where it was when I first owned the Jeep with only 6,000 miles on it. Currently it is lifted and running 32"s with stock gearing. Now I am thinking of purchasing the trans tune to get even more mpg's. Has anyone had tried there trans tune? And is it possible to get better then stock mpg's while running 32"s?

For me, the trans. tune resulted in a much higher MPG gain than the engine tune. I strongly recommend it if MPGs matter to you.

The one drawback is the trans. is a lot more "clunky" now and it has lost that butter-smooth shifting that the 545RFE is known for. But 520 miles on 19.8 gallons...which I've never ever seen before....yeah I'll take that any day of the week. Thanks GDE!

What style driving were you seeing 580 a tank. I have gotten 600 a tank a few highway trips before lift and tires and very careful to stay under 70mph.

My experience with the GDE trans tune is a little different- no clunky trans; shifts seem as smooth as ever, just at a more appropriate (lower) rpm for the diesel. Even towing heavy been very smooth. :?: :?:

I usually go about 480 on a tank- occasionally I see over 500, but not often. As an experiment one day I was going on a freeway trip so I filled up at the gas station I usually do first. I then drove 57 miles (GPS miles) of relatively flat highway at 65 mph with the cruise on. It was a Sunday morning so I had no real traffic to contend with. At the 57 mile mark I stopped and put in 1.571 gallons for an astonishing 36.28 MPG.

I need to try this again going the other way. It may be a variation in the gas pumps. Even if it was off it was still well over 30 MPG and darn impressive in my book!! The fact that this vehicle is capable of these numbers and then can be hooked up to 5K lbs of trailer is a dream come true for me. I now have the combination of economy commuter and part-time hauler that I need.

Well, I just got the trans tune installed. It wasn't too bad removing and installing the TCM. The tune isn't as big of a difference as I was expecting, maybe that is part of the good work that GDE does, as you notice the difference if you pay attention to your speedo and the tach. I should note that my TCM was not F37'ed, so my 5th OD shifting RPM didn't change all that much.

I like the ability to lug the engine more, and having the TC locked up for my commute is a good thing as well. I haven't run a tank through it yet, but I am interested to see where my MPG are going to be.

I don't think the shifting is "clunky", maybe more positive, though that is just semantics.

I like it.

We saw a 3-4 mpg improvement when traveling in the range of 35-55 mph. DOC

Stock tires, no lift, GDE full torque ECO tune, GDE TCM tune and light right foot.

Careful planning so that there are prevailing tailwinds and the route is generally from higher to lower elevation will help. This may involve foregoing round trip travel.

You also need to remove the rubber sleeve from the front caliper slider pins to keep them from binding and causing brake drag. Make sure the viscous heater is not running for long, either by removing the relay, using a GDE tune or using a thermostat that opens at at least 192 degrees F. BTW, hotter thermo than a good oem gets you 1-2 mpg. Finally, opening up exhaust may help. GDE claims cleaning out cat does not help.

Doc - sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you remove the rubber sleeve entirely, or just take it off to pack with grease? If you take it off altogether, does this increase the slider's vulnerability to corrosion (road salt etc)?

Lancer,

I was NOT referring to the slider BOOT that is supposed to seal grease IN and water/dirt OUT. That most certainly SHOULD be retained. I was referring to the thin rubber SLEEVE that surrounds one of the two front caliper slider pins. This sleeve "grows" slightly over time and jams the caliper so it cannot "float" as it is designed to. I have found that if thoroughly packed with bespoke slider grease it does NOT rattle.

Thank you Doc - I'm grateful for the clarification. I have long thought that my front brakes "hang" at times - espeially when it's hot. I'll take that sleeve off, and pack with slider grease as advised. Thanks again.

Just got done with a drive from Vegas to L.A. Filled up in Vegas and again 4 hours later, in L.A. ( was curious).
29.5 mpg with the cruise set at 75 most of the way. The silly EVIC read 36.5.
