A Jeep dealer has the Jeep and when I called about when it would be done he said he did not have 4 of the special tools needed. He said he had 2. Was looking for the others..... Ahhh, it has been there a week. Thinking....what to say to him? |

Any hint as to what tools they "think" they need that they are "missing". The job needs 2 cam lock pins and/or the 1 cam lock tool (VM 1085) although at least one mechanic reports successfully using a VW counter hold tool in lieu of the cam lock tool and that's about it. If one wants to go the extra mile and hold the flywheel the "special" factory tool for that is an allen wrench of the proper size and any decent shop should have the wrench needed to remove the fan as that is a fairly standard size. GDE rents the needed tools for a net after returning the tools of like $30. |

I had one of our Chevy techs do mine, no VM tools in the shop. |

Yes. It was off by a tooth on the exhaust side. Sounded like a Powerstroke. It was re-adjusted in 30 mins. |

Yeah you can rent tools from Green Diesel, but will they show up? I paid Keith the $130 bucks, and the tools were due about 6/2, Keith charged my card, but no word. I hope they show up soon. |

JL Rockies wrote: I had one of our Chevy techs do mine, no VM tools in the shop. So since the chevy techs can do it without any special tools and only be one tooth off you think that's good ![]() For me one tooth off is not good enough

Crank up engine to check adjustment of timing belt after installation and before putting front cover, etc back on I imagine. That etc. (AC, generator, power steering pump, and such) doesn't include anything critical to a short run as the water pump is driven by the timing belt. |

Yup, thats what I did, cranked it over and ran it a bit before putting everything back together. Good practice IMO. Vid of startup with TB exposed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdgkHqejox8 |

Yea, I did the same test run after putting my belt in. You have no idea of the level of fear on that first start-up... But all was well. I would suggest the test start for anyone doing a belt, and as for tools... You don't "need" the Miller special tools, but the three pins and the cam lock DO help in knowing you got it right. |

I've done hundreds of TDI timing belts. With the right tools and procedure it is impossible to be off one tooth. You either don't have the tools to do it right or you don't know how to do it right if it's off one tooth. |

And he already said they didn't have the VM tools.... To the OP, give them the link to our tech section. There are several threads on doing it without the proper tools.. For all you diy guys out there, I came across this on the web: http://autotools247.com/product/VS4945/ ... Belt+Drive |

I've corresponded with a VW mechanic who successful did a CRD timing belt successfully with cam pins he machined himself and a counterhold tool from VW to hold the pulleys in place when locking them down http://www.metalnerd.com/cat02.htm Part MN3036 |

I did the timing belt change myself without any of the special tools. I used drill bits to lock the cam shafts. Then used metal strapping the type with lots of holes along it and fixed the camshaft gears in place by using two straps in a X shape from one cam to the next. Used some bolts and nuts to hold the X shaped strapping setup in the holes on the camshafts. Was really quite easy. Just time consuming. Think it took me 6 hours straight. |

I hope they show up soon. That's my fault. I had to keep the tools a couple of extra days because my replacement water pump was improperly machined and the alignment pins were WAY off. I had to get a new pump shipped in, and everything put together. I shipped them on Friday 17 June, directly to you, UPS ground. |

Home Depot stocks all kinds of VM locking pins in the hardware section. I do acknowledge that this solution is not in the over-thinking nature of this forum however. |

Just do it yourself and quit whining. but seriously, how hard is it to do yourself? Ive done standard gas engine timing belt replacements, never a diesel? Is it more complicated? |
