Post subject:  Provent/CCV filter needed with SAMCO?

I finally ordered my SAMCO hoses... waited way too long and shouldn't risk blowing a hose anymore. I haven't done a Provent or any type of CCV filter yet. My CCV is wet and nasty same with the OEM hoses.

My question is with the new silicone hoses, and the GDE tune (which keeps the oil cleaner) do I still need a filter/trap to keep oil out of intake? It wouldn't want a build up of gunk in there, but clean oil that might get burned up once in a while (some full throttle applications  ) shouldn't be too bad? Maybe even keep a few things lubed?

If not, I'm going to do to provent.

Thanks

I had this same question when I put Samco hoses on 14 months ago. I went with GDE's opinion that the cleaner oil would do no harm, and maybe it might even clean some of the carbon out of the intake. My Samco's still feel and look like new, but they still sweat oil. :x

Great Idea, that way others can buy a cheap CRD and only need to clean out the intake.

I'd vote on sarcasm...

The hose breakdown is only one of the issues with CCV oil - most of it going to condense in the CAC - since I clean about 1 oz per thousand miles out of my Provent - I'm going to assume that a fair amount of that would have settled in the bottom of the Intercooler if the Provent wasn't there. Not a big deal initially but over the miles it builds up.

Ok, I would agree.

My CCV breather itself is pretty dirty/oily, but I wouldn't say it is directly leaking or broken. Is the puck a common thing that needs replacement? I haven't seen/read in the Newbie guide about replacing it.

It's finally time to get my engine bay cleaned up :)

I clean my MAP and puck about twice a year. Let the puck soak a little in some degreaser, blow it dry with compressed air, clean the MAP with gumout carb cleaner. All looks like new, just be very gentle in handling the MAP.

I still have my homemade "catch can" hooked up with my GDE tune. Just like ATXKJ stated I pour out about the same amount of oil.

I suspect this debate will run on a long time. As I understand the issue: 1) the CCV (hockey puck on top of engine with hose to air box to turbo hose just in front of turbo) dumps oil into the air intake system and that oil then flows thru the turbo>intercooler>engine system thereby depositing some amount of oil in the hoses/intercooler/intake and 2) the EGR injects some amount of "soot" from the exhaust into the same system (apparently at the intake manifold area). Oil alone is not too bad except to the extent it degrades the hoses that a lot of us have replaced with SAMCOs BUT and it is a big but the combination of oil and soot can clog the MAP and other portions of the intake system with a nice soot/oil cake. The approach to fixing these problems has been to reduce the amount of oil (Provent or EHM) or soot (SEGR, EGR block out, or GDE tune) or both. IMHO I'm not too worried about the oil, given that I have SAMCOs and don't think that with the air flow much oil will reside in the intercooler. Therefore with the GDE EcoTune pretty much cutting EGR function down to nill I've elected to take a wait and see approach by checking the cleanlyness of my MAP at each 6,000 mile oil change interval. If it stays clean I'm home free but if it still tends to get dirty (sooty) I'll go the Provent or EHM addition route.

It's the "third hose" that you still have to worry about if you have Samcos. By that I mean the hose from the air box to the turbo inlet, which has all the oil blowby run into it and rot it out where it connects to the turbo. That's why I went with the Provent, and my Samcos are bone dry.

Nope just fact.
Reduce the oil into the intake with a good oil separator (made my own) and shut off the EGR and your intake will not gunk up. Very Simple for me building and installing an oil separator takes less time and money than cleaning out the Intake. Having dry Samco's and Intercooler is great too.
I cleaned out the clogged intake on my Wife's TDI and that was enough for me.

Hey, at $8.50 a quart for Mobil 1, why waste a drop?

I have a provent, got mine well before the GDE tune. I still think it's a good idea. mine catches a lot of oil I think. I want to keep my CRD at least untill its paid off hopfully longer and I want it to be clean and running good.

Well, a provent isn't that expensive, only 2-3 tanks of fuel :)

Is cleaning the CCV puck good enough, or does it need replacement?

Well, my OEM hoses were filled with oil. The driver's side had a nice little pool in the bottom... So I think provent for sure.

No answer to this question yet in this thread, but I'd like to know as well. Does the CCV ever need replaced or is just cleaning it alright? I assume it's similar to the MAP? Most people seem to think you can just give it a good cleaning, but a couple people have mentioned actually replacing it.

I've been reading the forums all weekend, and this is the first thread I've seen that mentions cleaning out the "hockey puck" (thanks, papaindigo, for explaining exactly what it is!)

I still have my original one, and my provent drain fills fast, so I am thinking I need to replace it. I haven't even cleaned it actually

Not that I try to be funny, but now, the provent 200 is about 140 from idparts. So it's less than 2 full tanks, lol. Idparts also sells the filter for provent. Even if the filter gets clogged, the release valve should protect the engine from over pressure.

Since this thread has swung over to a CCV discussion, check out this thread

A couple of us are experimenting with putting Scotch Brite material in the top chamber of the CCV, in order to condense some of the oil vapor before it goes to our Provents. Many old day pvc valves emptied into filter material in the old style air filters so this isn't somehing new. Right now I'm using a catch bottle for the Provent oil to go into. When the weather gets warmer, I'll figure out a way to "plumb" the drippings into the pan. It is very surprising the amount of oil that the Provent catches, 1 to 2 ounces per 1000 miles.

As far as cleaning out the CCV, when I popped the top on mine at 75K miles, it was totally clean. Rightfully so with that amont of oil blowing through it !!
