Ok, there is a problem with my CRD that I hope you all can help me with. (05 CRD with 16K miles) Every time I am at a stop and then accelerate I hear a clunk noise from the front end area. I only hear it once. Then occassionaly when stopping I hear it again. It happens when going from stop into forward or reverse. You can feel it a little when it happens, but you can really hear it. I will be in drive (or reverse) and after pressing down on the gas to either go forward or back out of my garage, I will immediatly hear a "Clunk." THen I don't hear it again until I am comming to a stop or accelerating from a stop. It also occassionaly happens when rounding corners very sharply. Any help in diagnosing this will be great. Thanks in advance.

Hey longarm,
What you are describing sounds like LBJ's going from the description on some other threads. Check out the sticky on the 4X4 forum. From the severity of your description, I would be concrened about your safety. That joint will separate easily under the spring load of the front suspension. I'm hearing some of the same but not that bad yet. Hear a little loose popping/knock in the front end when releasing the brakes after a stop. But you know, probably just my imagination like my transmission dropping out of gear and the blown oil seal in my turbo. Maybe this just normal for this vehicle too?

We had both lower ball joints and the rear track bar joint (on top of the rear diff. housing) replaced at 20K miles, they were shot.

However, the CRD still clunked. Turned out to be a loose passenger side motor mount on the engine. You could feel it right through the passenger side floorboard when it happened (the mount is right in front of that).

I'll bet dollars to donuts that it's your motor mount. Several others have had the same problem.

Yep... definitely the motor mounts. I had the exact same symptoms. After going to the stealership twice, they finally figured out that it was the motor mounts. I'll take that over bad ball joints anyday.

KJ left at dealership overnight. Service person was with me and herd noise. One of the mechanics said something of the transfer case being in "Normal Specs." The service guy said he didn't think that this was right and was going to have another mechanic look at it. The GM there thinks it's the IFS equalivent of a U Joint. He gave me the tech. term and I can't remember it. Either way, he will cover it under warranty and hooked me up with a loaner.

Ok, I go to pick up my CRD and was not happy. They replaced both upper ball joints and a torn CV boot. It's still making the noise. The mechanic just scratched his head. I about went balistic right there. This is driving me fricking crazy! Why can't I buy a vehicle that doesn't fall apart on me?

Dude, have you had them check the motor mounts yet????? It doesn't sound like it from your posts.

I'm tellin' ya, I'll bet you a big fat donut that it's your passenger side motor mount being loose.

The lift almost certaintly caused the torn CV boot, especially on the CRD where it sits higher in the front stock than the gassers - that extra metal strut plate really pushes the limits and causes the boot to rub on itself.

The upper ball joints were probably fine and they did that as a WAG.

The noise is probably a motor mount.

The front driveshafts have been a problem since 2002. My 3.7L had the same clunk...they replaced the driveshaft and the problem never cropped up again. If that doesn't fix it make the GM read this thread...lol...and fix the motor mount.

I had the same exact problem as described and I just got mine back with new mounts and no more clunk.

Thanks everybody for the help. The dealership replaced the upper ball joints, right side cv boot, and front driveshaft. They then called to tell me that it was still making the noise and they just weren't sure what it was. I told the tech the same thing I told the mechanic from day one, it's a Motor Mount. Sure as Hell, he calls back and says that they replaced the pass. side motor mount and the noise is gone.

Thanks to this forum and various threads I have save much time and money by doing my own research.

I too had the clunking sound just as described in this thread, mechanic wanted to change out all kinds of suspension components estimated $2,000 to fix. I told him to replace both motor mounts and only motor mounts and lo & behold it resolved the clunking noise.

Thank you for all the great experience and sharing.
