| Post subject: | P1140 code? |
I just changed the oil, in the rain, on the wife's 06 CRD. I cleaned the sensor in the intake while I was at it, even though it did not appear to need it (I have been running the ORM for 4K now). I plugged in my Harbor Freight scan tool, it is the better one that they sell, just to see if any new codes were there since we have a CEL for the ORM. I had 2 codes. One was the air flow code due to the ORM, the other was P1140. I was able to clear the air flow meter code, but the P1140 would not clear. Not that it came right back, just that the scan tool would not clear it. My question(s) are: why won't it clear? What is the P1140 code? I plugged the air flow meter back in to see if that would help anything, and I did not expect it to, and was correct in that assumption. I am due for inspection soon, so I need to get rid of the CEL. It runs fine otherwise. Thanks! |

Pop over to Sir Sams NOOB guide and scroll down to the link to the manuals. Download a copy of the 2006 FSM. P1140 is a vacuum solenoid code according to the FSM which may or may not be right. Do you have a turbo boost problem. If not my notes say "NOTE - P1140 code FSM notwithstanding probably relates to the FCV (flow control valve) which if failed open can be ignored (e.g. just drive with the FCV failed open). As of July 2011 I don't know how to jigger the system to make the MIL/CEL go away." Of course you can replace the FCV but if if failed open leaving in that mode has absolutely no adverse impact on vehicle performance or durability; you just have to live with the code. If the code triggers the CEL light and you have to do the inspection bit then you may have to replace the FCV unless someone has figured out how to make the code go away. Not a high priority for me as there is no inspection bit where I live. |

Not a high priority for me as there is no inspection bit where I live. It appears the P1140 is a FCV code on the CRD's from what I am finding. My issue is this: The scan tool I have and my buddy has will clear the code for the air flow meter (unplugged for the ORM, but now plugged back in) but won't clear the P1140 code. It says on the scan tool(s) that it is a manufacturer specific code. It just won't clear. If I select clear codes, it says "OK", but as soon as I go back to the main screen and read the codes, it is still there. This happens without me ever starting the engine, thus, the code will not clear. Is there a reason? Does Chrysler do this so you have to go to the dealer for certain codes to be cleared? I disconnected/clamped the battery cables together for over an hour with no luck. |

If there's something wrong with the FCV, the code can't be cleared. |

Yup, for example if the FCV is unplugged the code will trigger again instantly. |

The code never clears. If I clear it not starting it and go back to read codes, it is still there... Confused. |

I repeat, the code can't be cleared because your FCV is BAD. As in, malfunctioning internally. |

I've never seen, on any other vehicle I have worked on, that it cannot be reset with the engine not running and it does not clear even when the engine is never even started after clearing the code.... |

In my world codes are either inactive or active. Inactive means there was a problem and code was recorded but problem does not exist at this time. Active means there is a problem right now. When the problem stops, it changes to an inactive code. You can clear inactive codes but not active codes because the problem still exists. I think they refer to them as "hard codes" in the automotive industry. |

I always thought that once a code is cleared, the vehicle has to be started for the code to come back, even if the code instantly came back. I dunno how the thing failed with the air flow meter unplugged. Since I plugged it back in I get a hesitation at light throttle and more smoke... Which I assume is a result of the FCV being INOP for whatever reason. I did check the FCV and it was open with the engine off. I could move it by hand and it seems to have resistance from it's motor. |

When you key on, but don't start, the ECM wakes up and moves the FCV. With a good FCV you can hear this whine from the engine bay. This is regardless of whether you have the MAF unplugged. When you key off after the engine has been running the FCV is instantly moved all the way closed and held there for a few seconds after the engine stops. You can hear that as well, and it's also regardless of the MAF being unplugged. This is to reduce engine shake at shutdown from the high compression ratio. So bottom line, if the ECM is awake, it knows the FCV is dead. |

Not trying to hi-jack a post but it is a VERY similar question: I just did the glow-plug swap (last night). FCV worked before but is now throwing the 1140 code and is not make click-tick sound after I shut it off. Have plugged-unplugged connecters and have tapped the gear housing immediately after engine start and engine shutdown. Anything else I can do? Choke cleaner with hose removed? B2 |

A tune can eliminate this code if you do not want to buy a new FCV. The only function you lose with a broken FCV is the throttle closure when engine is shut off and thus will have slightly more shaking of the engine and higher engine mount excursion. Whenever the key is on and the code is active it will not clear...as others previously stated. |

Thanks Keith, I'll just need to remind myself of that tomorrow when I call and ask for my old tune back now that I've done the re-flash this AM. Scott |

I'm sorry to resurrect an old thread from 2011, but presumably it is better to necro than post a new thread. I just received the P1140 code tonight in my new-to-me 06 CRD and based on the consensus here I believe that mine has failed open. The car runs just fine, turbo is making good boost and the engine has a bit of a rattle/shake on shutdown. I will try to clean the FCV ... is there a documented procedure to do so? If it is dead, what is the part number and how much does it cost? Is there a tutorial on how to replace it (I tried searching)? Is it even worth repairing given the cost/trouble (I do have OBD inspection in Ontario)? |

The FCV is about $360 shipped. I just went through this with the FCV as well as the EGR valve. Your best bet (Honestly) is to send the ECU up to (maybe down to in your case) Keith and the guys in Wixom, MI [http://www.greendieselengineering.com] and have an ECO tune done ($450). This will clear the P1140 and disable the FCV as well as the EGR so you never have to worry about them or a CEL again for that issue. Honestly, it also added about 8mpg and ~20HP, Jeep runs much better now. Also, the FCV is a real pain to change. Or just pay the $300 deposit on their tool and flash it yourself. You can keep the tool and forfeit the $300 or send it back to get your money back, this way you don't have to wait ~3 days to get your ECU back and your Jeep isn't down. All told, it's up to you, but those FCV's and EGR's are known to fail on this vehicle, and they're a pain and fairly expensive to change out. Also, go read the NOOB guide, there are some very helpful links there to all kinds of issues for our Jeeps, including a very handy "GETTING STARTED" section which will walk you through a few things you need to look at while you're under the hood. There are some links there to the service and technical manuals which are great references and saveable in .pdf format for your perusal. |

Thats a good perspective from someone that has gone through the same problem. Since the GDE tune is almost the same price as the FCV it's kind of a no-brainer. To go with that. Presumably the GDE will defeat the CEL and inspectors will not e able to tell that the CEL existed? I suppose I'll give them a call to discuss options and pricing. Again thanks for the advice. Oh and yes I have done quite a few things on the Jeep in my week of ownership. I posted a thread below about it titled something like New Owner from Toronto. Noob guide was great as was the fuel filter change guide. |
