Hi group, I am rebuilding my CRD engine due to a broken ceramic glow plug. See my original post with link to pictures here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=58806&p=654675#p654675 I am still in the process of putting it together. It had 3 of 4 glow plugs broken off, 2 made it out of their cylinders without causing damage. The block has a new liner, I just reassembled the main bearing carriers and put the crank back in (the crank slides in through the back of the block and does not have main bearing caps). I will fit the rings next. I am concerned about the head, the shop it is at does AMAZING aluminum head work an says it is saveable. I got all of the parts he needed but he can't find specs for the installed height of the valves so he wants the cylinder head cover with the cams. The problem with that is when you put that cover on you can't measure the valve clearance. Does anyone knows where I can find vavle height specs. Thanks, Tigafila |

I'm in the same boat that Tigafila was a year ago. After doing a leakdown test it became very clear that I had a problem with the exhaust valves on my second cylinder. I pulled the head and took it to a local shop that has a great reputation for head work on small diesels. He's got the right pilots to work on it, but he's noted that the valve stems on the exhaust valves have been seriously beat up. He wants to know what the height of the installed valve stem should be. I've looked at both the 05 and the 06 FSMs. I've found specs on angles, springs, diameters of the stems, and heights of the guides, but not the install heights of the stems themselves. I believe his concern is that if he machines the valve seats he may need to shorten the stems, otherwise they'll sit too high when it's all put back together. At the same time, if he shortens the stem too much, he's concerned that there may not be enough clearance when the rocker arm pushed on the valve stem to keep it from hitting the valve spring retainer. Any notion what the spec is? All I've been able to find is "make sure they are all the same height" |

I haven't seen the info but others working on ARP head studs have found the VM reps in North America (US) to be very helpful... FYI |

Thanks for the tip. I've sent an email to VM-NA. Hopefully I'll hear back. If anyone else has wisdom, I'd love to hear it. |

Contact: Barry Dobar VM North America 248-977-5901 bdobar@vm-na.com Barry has been a great help to me regarding questions about this engine and his VM Motori shop may have the parts you need on the shelf. He may also be able to procure the specs for the head. Tell him Lostkjs sent you. |
