Apologize as I normally will just search for this type of stuff, but I am on deployment (Navy) and the best I can get internet wise is a hour of 28.8k First question: My wife went to start the Jeep and it just gives a clicking sound. She changed the battery and that did not fix the problem. Next steps I think are starter or alternator but I am not sure which one based off of the diagnosis of won't start and clicking sound, so I am hoping that maybe somebody has some insight? Second question: Does any one know a good mechanic in San Diego for this type of stuff? Thanks Joe |

Thanks Joe If the new battery she put in is a good, powerful, fully charged one and is connected with good tight connections then the alternator does not come into the equation at this stage. Could be the starter solenoid/motor.....does the "clicking" noise come from the starter motor or is it only a small click from say a relay energizing.? You need someone with a bit of know-how to jumper the solenoid so as to confirm whether it is the solenoid or the electrical path coming from the ignition switch to the solenoid that is at fault. There is a relay for the Starter Motor...it is in the relay/fuse box in the engine bay. The decal on the relay box shows where the various relays are located.....there are normally similar relays fitted nearby, such as the wiper relays, so you can swap the Starter Relay with a neighbouring relay with the same part number to see if the relay may be faulty. |

You might want to check out the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60575&hilit=ignition+switch . Also it would be helpful to know 1) physically where the click sound is coming from as nearly as possible; 2) whether the headlights and horn work without the key on; and 3) whether things like the radio and dash warning lights/gauges that are controlled by the key come on when the key is turned. I'm by no means all that much good on modern vehicle computer controlled systems but as I recall on the CRD the key switch does not directly power the starter like in the "olden" days. Rather the key switch turns a rod (which can break) that in turn activates the ignition switch (opposite side of the steering column I believe) that then either directly or thru a relay asks the ECU for permission to start the engine and if permission is granted the ECU sends a signal (probably thru a relay) to tell the starter assembly to do its thing. I'm sure others will jump in soon with a better idea than I of where in this process things can go wrong and how to check them if the vehicle has a good battery. X2 not alternator with respect to the starting problem if a good battery was just installed. I stress good battery because if the alternator is not charging the battery or the replacement battery lacks a good charge then the ECU won't give the vehicle permssion to start. |

The ignition switch actuator pin is what broke on mine. Key would turn and radio would come on but no start.... temporary fix was to pop the top off the relay for the starter and push the contacts together to start it. Key on of course....and make sure you can turn the key all the way off. If you come to the conclusion that this is the problem you will need torx bits with holes in them (security type) to take things apart. |

By all means read up on the link that papaindigo posted..it is quite a common problem and the dealers will always say that the broken pin cannot be replaced by itself but the whole steering column assembly needs replacing....you will see from the link that you can buy the link component by itself. However, that is why I asked if you can hear a definite loud "click" at the starter solenoid...if the link from the key tumbler assembly has snapped then you be unlikely to get power to go to the solenoid....but it may be possible. To see if this ignition tumbler link is broken you need to remove the top and bottom plastic covers over the steering column by removing two Torx screws clamping them together, The ignition switch itself is held on by a smaller Torx screw...remove the switch and see if the actuating shaft for it is broken. There are some interlocks that have to be in place as well for the motor to turn over: The sensors on the auto-transmission to ensure you are in Park or Neutral before starting or clutch switch on the manual Jeep. The SKIM anti-theft that you may have installed or any other anti-theft device must be operational. These will stop all action though, ie. there will be no"click" at the solenoid. The ECU will prevent the starter solenoid from energizing if it is not happy that the above interlocks are satisfied. |

Thank you for all of the responses. My wife apparently did not charge the new battery until this morning Now that she has it cranks up just fine. Again thanks for all of the help.
