as to the vibration - no real ideas - I mean mine shakes like a diesel - but it's a diesel...so if you're familiar with those - it's relatively mild.

now rattles - like engine mounts - been there - done that - but rattle - not shake and nothing that would affect a mirror.

is the vibration all the time like at idle or only when driving at speed? If it is only while driving i would have the tires checked for balance and alignment.

I have two CRDs, one sport and one limited. some how the limited is a bit smoother and more quite. However, on my sport the right mirror vibrates a bit at highway speeds and on my limited it is the same but on the left mirror  on both you can feel a bit of vibration at the steering wheel and at shot-off, but not anywhere else, those vibrations are not disruptive of functionality at all. What is the mileage on the liberty? both motor mounts on my limited failed at 69000 miles, and at 87000 on my sport causing all sorts of weird vibrations and noises. If you visually inspect the mounts you wont be able to see the difference between a good one and a bad one but if you take them off and shake them you will hear like if they had marbles inside (maraca effect )which means they went south. I think it is due to the fact that they are not only motor mounts but also insulators and they have hollow areas inside, but I am not really sure on that one.
I would advice to replace both. they cost about 90 bucks on line and they are probably one and a half hours worth of work.
hope that helps any.
these are the part numbers for both mounts if you need them

I think someone out there recently converted a Delorean to a diesel:

Hi All;

recently I purchased a 06 Liberty CRD. I have some experience with diesel engines, but only in BMW and Mercedes (early to late 80s). My Jeep acts different and I am not sure if this is normal (since I have no experience with Jeep CRD). So, here are the things that bother me:

1. You can feel a strong vibration through the seat, steering wheel and center armrest
2. The side mirrors vibrate so much that I can see only a blurry vision of the cars following me
3. The engine shakes violently upon turning off (after 3-4 minutes cool off)

Any advice is appreciated.

Jack :banghead:

The vibration is always there, the Jeep has 68K miles on it. However, the vibration increases by speed, at 70mph the car is tearing itself apart.

Compare to the BMW and Mercedes(1987 300D) I had, this shakes a lot more and is wild. That's why I was not sure if it was normal.

Hey Jack,

First off, welcome to the group. I have found this site and group the people on it to be a braintrust of knowledge; I hope that you do as well.

As to your vibration--it sounds to me like your counter-balance shafts are not working properly. If the Jeep is "tearing itself apart" any most any speed, it is more than the normal diesel vibrations or bad motor mounts.

The counter balance shafts are located under the crankshaft, are driven by the crankshaft are replaced as a unit as they are not seviceable. They must also be timed to the crankshaft, setting the crankshaft at TDC. Access to them is by removing the oil pan. P/N is 05140336AA. Hope this helps.

It might be helpful for you to post your location in your profile, there may be a local member who can drive your jeep and you can drive theirs to compare it to determine if anything is wrong.
