I've seen people mention getting an earlier air box. Can someone enlighten me :)

The mod is to replace the stock CRD airbox with a airbox out of 3.7. Don't think it improves performance, just moves the air intake higher to improve stream fording.

You need the bottom section out of just about any gasser and the snorkle. You don't need to replace the lid. There is also a diverter that fits on the radiator cross bar. I've never used it, but it is part of the 3.7 installation.

I did it, and aftwards I heard a slight vacuum noise, could tell it was sucking air (the turbo sure works!) but I don't think the noise was due to faster flow, just the fact that it was higher up, so the noise transfered inside easier.

You may also notice less junk in your airbox now. With the stock intake I would find whole leaves and once there was a plastic store bag in there. Also the filter would get wet in heavy rain. With the V6 intake all of this has pretty much gone away.

The mod helps prevent rain or wet snow from soaking the filter too.
Also it makes a little more room for other mods I have planned.

As far as the air filter becoming saturated and restricting air flow in the rain, it appears to be an exaggeration. I finally got around to testing this theory and sprayed water directly onto the filter to see if it would restrict air. It didn't. It stayed damp to touch for about 30 seconds but after goosing the engine, the filter had no discernible moisture on it. I have checked the air box in torrential rain and other than a little water in the bottom of the box, there was nothing on the filter. There is just too much air moving through the filter to allow any incidental rain spray to saturate it.

Moving the intake higher with the V6 mod might be a good idea to keep the trash out of the box though. Every time I check or change my filter, the stock air box is full of leaves, dust and bugs.

It's a good mod, but the filter element is the same, much too small.
