Post subject:  HOAT Consistency

I changed my 'stat over the weekend and couldn't help notice that, while completely clean, the factory coolant of 5 years had a much more syrupy consistency that the Zerex G05 60/40 mix I was replacing it with.

So whats up with this?

Is the factory HOAT coolant different?
Is the factory mix ratio higher - but it appeared thicker than even neat Zerex?
Does it get thicker with age?

This difference leads me to wonder if you can use a standard float based SG measuring device to estimate the freeze point of HOAT coolant or do you need a different technique.

BTW, yes my Zerex is full strength, not the pre-mix variety.

Age has something to do with it.... new hoat coolant from the dealer is not thick at all.

Hence the reason why some of us replace the coolant at 30,000 miles or every 2 years.

Thick coolant makes for longer cabin heat to arrive.

I recently had major engine work done and since flushing and refilling the cooling system with new HOAT coolant from the dealer, my cabin heat is quicker to arrive.
