Post subject:  2.8 CRD Turbo Problem??

Hi

I own a kj 2.8 CRD. I was driving on the highway yesterday and today at 75mph and all of a sudden my Jeep started to jerk quite badly. This was after about 30 Miles on the highway. It returned to normal after about 20 seconds. Then when I stopped about thirty miles later after driving at a constant 75mph, once I have come to a complete stop. The Idle speed (RPM) is very irregular (up and down) and I can feel the vehicle pulling while I am still in D until I have waited the required time for the turbo to cool. Then it seems fine again. Is this an indication of the turbo starting to pack up? If not then what else could it be? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards

Dylan

My CRD did something like this once just after I started driving it daily for the job. I freaked. I was out in the country in the middle of many, many cornfields. I called someone more knowledgeable than I about these mongrels. He said to pull over, turn off the engine, wait 10-15 seconds then start it again. I did just that and everything cleared up just fine. No CEL/codes were thrown. It has not done it since. Hope this helps.

FWIW,

Hoosier CRD

Howdy dylan Welcome to LOST

If it hasn't done this before - then the odds are you got some bad fuel, and your filter is getting clogged. Fuel flow problems normally don't give a check engine light - they'll go into a 'semi' limp mode and if you turn the engine off/on - they recover - sometimes the problem repeats, best to change filters though.

if it does this on a more regular basis - you might have an air leak in the fuel system or the tranny may be slipping a bit.

try reading Sam's Noob guide http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54207- and if you post Diesel questions in the CRD section - you tend to get more responses.

Hi and welcome.

This is defivately a fuel filter issue, wich is getting clogged, and creates air bubbles in the system, sometimes the idle can get so rough you might think the turbo is dying or the injectors are faulty.Common problem so dont worry.

Get a new fuel filter, before removing it check for any leak at the fuel filter head, where the heater section is,if its not leaking, change the filter, bleed and go!You might need to bleed a few times, depending how much air is in,i never need to bleed more than 2 times each time i had to change mine, wich i do every 15k miles. Most of times 1 bleed is ok if you dont have any leaks,i did bleed twice once, last winter, changed it outside, and it was really cold,so i was doing it quick,so a few days later a air bubble went in the system,i bleeded it once again, and was ok since.
I always carry a 11m mini wrench in the glove box for the bleeder screw just in case.

Oh and by the way fill the filter with fuel additive or just fuel before installing it back on the jeep, less pumping/bleeding...

Thanks for all the replies. the info here is really good. I decided to take the truck down to my mechanic for his opinion and he agrees that it is air in the fuel line. He came to this conclusion without any prompting from myself. My Filter and bleeder looks quite different from any of the pics i can find here. Below is a pic of mine. Do you think its different because It is a south african model? I mean it is still a 2.8 CRD Liberty(known as cherokee here) If you look at the pics you will see the yellow cap on top of the filter, that is the primer plunger and the brass nut to the right of that is the bleeder screw.

What year is it? I have a 2005, and mine looks a bit different to that: the primer pump is black and on the right side, and the bleed is off to the left of the unit (viewing it from the front of the vehicle).

He has the 04 - with the Racor style fuel head - that's what we swap in - to fix the problems with the Black plastic fuel head......

Dylan, it's no use posting outside of the CRD section. The gassers haven't got a clue...

What you describe sounds exactly like a restricted fuel filter or air leak. Changing the filter is a necessary maintenance item, especially if it hasn't been done in the past six months. Change that first and then move on to the next step if the problem continues.
