Hi Everybody,

I have a question regarding DTC's. I accessed the DTC's by using the ignition sequence and it responded by giving me ten different codes. I know what the codes mean but these are obviously in the memory. My question is, if the CEL is off then are these codes still a problem? Should the codes dissapear if the problems have been fixed or do they need to be manually cleared? If these were still an issue then wouldn't the CEL be illuminated?

Kind Regards

Dylan

I don't know for sure about using the key trick to pull codes on a 2004 but when/if that trick works on a 2005-06 the last 2 digits of the code are often transposed.

As to your question:
1. whether or not the CEL lights depends on what the codes are. For example I have my viscous heater relay pulled, so it's clutch never engages, which stores a code that I can "see" with my code reader but that code does not cause the CEL to come on.
2. it is possible you have a code that should trigger the CEL light but that light is not working either because the bulb has gone bad or because someone either painted that area black or disabled the bulb to hide the CEL (this has been know to happen). I presume the 2004 instrument cluster is similar to later models in that when you first key on the ignition all the various cluster warning lights, including the CEL, come on as a bulb check. If so confirm that your CEL light works. If it does not work you need to dig deeper. FYI if the bulb is disabled or bad the dealer reflex is to tell you that you need a $700 or so new instrument cluster plus $$$ to install and calibrate. I'd use words not allowed on the forum but the short version is that's not true. If the 2004 cluster is the same as the 2005-06 cluster the CEL bulb and others are soldered in LED bulbs. Replacements can be obtained at any good electronics store for like $3 and any good hand at small soldering jobs, computer or radio tech, can remove and solder in a replacement bulb.
EDIT 3. Some codes clear on their own after the problem is fixed or goes away although it may take a number of drive cycles for the code to clear. Other codes have to be cleared manually.

It seems to me that the codes have to be manualy cleared....I have codes stored going back years now from problems long since fixed.
If you still make use of the Jeep Dealer for services etc. then have them clear the codes.
If you have a code reader you can clear the codes yourself but the early KJs used a PCI Bus which is hard to get code readers for...even my local Bosch agents could not read the codes or clear them. later KJs...2005 I think....changed the Bus to a CAN Bus which has a lot more code readers available.
As stated above, if you use the key on/off trick to get the codes then the last two digits are sometimes swapped around. :?

Hi Guys,

I spoke to a guy at American SUV here in SA. He says that they just use their CAN reader and it works fine. I won't take my truck there because they are really expensive. Parts for the jeep here are mostly only available from jeep themselves unless you bring it into the country yourself which doesn't really make sense as the shipping is real expensive too. What I have found is going to the numerous scrap yards around here is helpful as you can get excellent condition parts off of vehicles that have been written off by insurance companies at a fraction of the cost of new parts. Especially things like injectors etc. Regarding the CEL - when I turn the ignition on it does light for about 2 or 3 seconds so I assume it to be working order. What I have done is ,to test the theory, ordered a CAN reader (cheap and nasty $22) on ebay. If it does not work its only R170.00 (ZAR). So nothing much lost. My plan is to clear the codes and see if they re occur. Will post the result here.
