I have a 2005 liberty diesel. Was thinking about trading it in for new SUV. It has 100KKM on it. CEL has been on a while and found out it was a bad glow plug. I bought a set of the new style glow plugs and relay on eBay from a Chrysler dealer. Decided to get a local dealer to install glow plugs before I trade the jeep in for a new one. I also asked them to change the fuel filter at the same time because it have not been done for a while. Everything seemed to go well, he called me and recommended that I have the EGR valve cleaned up while he had everything opened, it made sense because it was replaced at about 60KKM. I picked the jeep up at the end of the day and confirmed the CEL light was off and paid the bill. I just got out of the dealership on the road when the engine stalled and would not start. I phoned the dealer and the mechanic who worked on the jeep came out to where I was Parked. He opened the hood and pumped the fuel primer pump a few times and it engine started and ran fine. We thought it was ok then after a minute I drove away,it then stalled again after about 20 seconds of driving. The mechanic was gone by then so I opened the hood and pumped primer again and it started. I made it back to the dealer by doing this a few times. They took the jeep into the shop, because it was the end of the day they said they would look at it in the morning, they were very good about everything and gave me a courtesy car to drive. Then the fun begins, in the morning they could not get it to start at all, they called and said the message they are getting is a bad crank pos sensor or air in fuel, they spend considerable time troubleshooting and even changed the ECM . Between waiting for parts and dealing with Chrysler tech 10 days had passed. They finally concluded it is the high pressure injector pump. A new one from Chrysler would cost $3200 plus 8 hours re and re. They did not like this as much as I did. They fould a local company that could test and repair the suspect pump. This would cost me the 8 hours labour even if the pump tested ok. I approved the repair. They have only charged me for the original labour for the glow plugs and fuel filter up to this point. The dealer called me on Friday and the pump has tested bad. The company had a identical rebuild unit on the shelf for $1200. I told them to go ahead with the repair. He called me back later and asked if I wanted the timing belt replaced because they had it all apart and would only charge me for parts, I said yes of course. They told me it should be ready Monday and I am keeping my fingers crossed. Has anyone out their experienced and similar problems? |

welcome yes.. any codes? did they tell about them? maybe a P0093.. now that you've spent that much on the Jeep crd are you thinking about keeping it. a timing belt will be needed soon..don't wait until it fails..if you think 3k is bad..you might want to lie down.. try the search feature..lots of info to start problems and other related issues.. yes..THERE IS A LOT to learn about the CRD's to keep them running but when they run..you won't a gasser jeep libby.. -dkenny |

100,000 KM is 62,000 miles, a bit over half the mileage before the timing belt was due. That your initial problem was a bad glow plug suggests to me that (a) you've found yourself a dealer prone to, er, errors in making repairs who (b) believes he has found a live one and is getting what he can out of you before you sell the vehicle. Changing the glow plugs and the fuel filter shouldn't cause the injection pump to take a dump. A ham-fisted fuel filter change COULD create an air leak, which would account for the repeated stall/pump-prime issue. This could be the result of not getting the water sensor installed in the bottom of the filter correctly, so that it leaked, or cracking a fitting or the fuel filter housing. Since there is no lift pump, an air leak will cause the system to suck air. I suppose sucking enough air could damage the injection pump. I'd like to hear what other, more experienced heads than mine have to say about this one. But to answer your question, I've never had such a problem. |

They will be changing the timing belt while they have it apart for the injector pump. We have owed the jeep for almost 4 years and are generally happy with it. The problem seems to be it is hard to find a good expert for repairs, Chrysler Tech Support does not seem to give the dealerships much support on this engine, all they want to do is get the dealer to replace expensive parts. Keeping it could be an option, but unless I get it fixed it is not worth much. I have been searching the forums but have not found many Injector pump problems. |

I did discuss the issue of the fuel filter. The mechanic seemed to have experience with these jeeps, the problem was the nex dayt it would not start at all, they backtracked on everything they worked on and even connected a new presurized fuel source right to the injector pump inlet and it still would not run. They have spend considerable time on this jeep and have been upfront about everything. They will not be charging me for much of the time spent. Weather it was air that caused the pump to fail could be possible but I will have to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Funny the dealer offed me $8000 trade in with the CEL on, I figured I could get $12 to $13 thousand if I had it fixed. I will find out Monday if the Injector pump was the actual problem. |

Did they replace your original glow plugs with the same 7v units, our the newer 5v units? If using the new 5v style, it requires a new control unit and ECM flash. This could be the problem! |

Got the Jeep back this week, almost $5000 later. Seems to run much better now, it was blowing a lot of black smoke on acceleration before the injector pump was changed, no it doesn't seem to blow any smoke and does not have any hesitation on the throttle. The only problem seems to be it takes a lot more cranking time before it starts. Before it used to start right away, now it takes a few seconds but it takes the same amount of time every time. |

Yes I did upgrade t the new glow plugs and relay, the mechanic was familiar with this change because he had done the job before. |

Paul_d wrote: Yes I did upgrade t the new glow plugs and relay, the mechanic was familiar with this change because he had done the job before. Are you sure that the ECU was updated by the dealer to the new Glow Plug voltage requirement? When the dealer updated the GP and relay, they told me that my ECU didn't need to be updated because it had the latest revision..... but in fact the ECU did require the update. Many who have updated their GP were told the same thing, that it was not required. If the GP voltage is not correct, the new GP will be toast and your start up will suffer. My Glow plugs take a second to warm up, the curly cue light stays on a second longer than the original ones but the start up is just as fast as before. Since I already had the GDE Hot Tune, I had GDE update my ECU to the correct Glow Plug voltage. |

I would think if the glow plugs were toast the CEL would be on because the computer would sense if the glow plug circuit was open. This is how we found out the old glow plugs were bad. |

I would still pose the question to the mechanic. I don't know how long it would take for the engine light to come on. |

We have it for sale right now, would like to get $13000 for it, it only has 104 000 km on it and has new tires and brakes. If anyone out there is interested let me know. I was offered $10 000 on a trade in. It is in excellent shape. |
