Towing 2k pound trailer from 0 to 4k feet from San Diego to Anza Borrego desert at medium speed (55 to 60), I noticed above average smoke (exhaust) and then CEL goes on and loss of power. Engine temp is fine (in middle, where it always is since new waterpump and thermostat). There is "puffing" noise and I can isolate it blowing at in cycle with the motor (air puff every other stroke or similar) straight up where it looks like a fuel injector is on top of the head, closest to the radiator. On the flats, the car runs fine but you hear the puff. On the hills, it is in a limp home mode and is an utter dog. I got it home last night and am trying to figure it out. A month or so ago, I had a local diesel mechanic: 1. extract a stuck glowplug I overtorqued 2. required removing the head 3. while in there, I had them do the timing belt, tensioners, waterpump, thermostat, etc. 4. GDE tune with metal glow plugs Do the injectors crack somehow and blow out air (and probably fuel)? The top end has some fuel or oil on the outside but not as much as you would think with the noise. The smoke is heavy, after reading some this morning, I'd guess its more white than black, my other diesels smoke under WOT and its very black, so this is a white (unburnt fuel?) smoking. Obviously, I can/probably will take it back to the guys that worked on it, but if theres anything I can do today to troubleshoot it, I'd prefer to figure it out here. I'll read up on how hard to swap injectors, I've read that they are coded per injector in the tune, but can I pull this injector and move it/swap it to one in the back and see if the puffing moves with it? |

GDE Tune/Scan box says "P0093" twice which I've read is lots of fuel leak, large leak. |

I suppose an injector could crack but would not think it's likely. More likely is the injector is loose and/or the "O" ring and/or copper crush washer are gone. See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64659&p=713209&hilit=injector#p713209 |

Thanks for the link, I hadnt found that one. From the pics, it appears the injector is "press fit"? Is that right? |

Alright, many, many, many thanks. So, it was a loose fuel injector. I need to download the FSMs and find the torque, but it was loose, I tightened it to hand tight where the others felt like they were at for tightness and cleared the code. Runs fine, no "puff, puff, puff" sound and the light isnt coming on and no smoke! Happy camper. Thanks. |

Good to hear but: 1. go to Sir Sam's NOOB guide and download BOTH the 2005 and 2006 FSMs. You need both as the 05 has illustration keys the 06 lacks and the 06 has diesel cooling system pages and diagnostic data the 05 lacks. 2. I'd strongly recommend you order and install a new "O" ring and crush washer on that injector as it is very likely both are no longer up to par. Given that the injector was loose that should be an easy job just be careful of the fuel high pressure line. The injectors are at least partially press fit in the sense that they do not screw in but there is a hold down clamp/bolt assembly that presses down on the injector base and holds it in place. Hence they are not a true press fit like a bearing. |
