Does anyone know where to get the tool to remove the pulley? Has anyone made a substitute? |

I just used a 17mm hex bit socket on an impact wrench. I took the alternator off the engine and used the gun to rattle the pulley right off. Took more time to get the belt off. |

About the same for me... Except I made it harder on myself by first thinking it was a reverse-thread and breaking off a socket while making the thing TIGHTER to the alternator. I wouldn't suggest that method. Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. And since the belt turns the same way as to tighten the pulley, you don't need to gorilla the pulley back on. |

The only way to get it off it with and impact gun or you can hold the pulley with a pipe wrench and use a 17mm hex bit. |

The tool you want is Miller 8433A.. I'd picked one up on eBay when mine went out. If you pay for shipping and promise to send it back - I can ship it inexpensively (USPS probably). Mark |

I'm not trying to hijack, but is there any reason NOT to buy a new alternator from a place like Autozone? I looked one up on their site for our Jeep and it's $144 with a $66 core charge. Don't get me wrong, I've not done it yet, I was just thinking that I've got 105k miles on the alternator, and the pulley was around $50 right? Well now I can't find the part number for the pulley for moparpartsamerica. I have no idea how much it is. Either way, are the autozone alternators and the like a problem? |

No, not really a problem, except you are going to be waiting a while to get one. |

I don't know why you might have waited, unless it was a temporary thing. I replaced the entire alternator from Autozone for that price, its the one I'm driving on right now. It works perfectly and came with the correct pulley installed. |

I ordered the pulley Sunday. I hope to have it by weeks end. I'll just use the 17 mm and the impact. @Mark, Thanks for the offer of the tool loan. |

My Pulley/alt from Autozone failed 2 days after install, it started making noise and when I went to get a replacement and they did not have any and even after 2 weeks I went looking for another source . of course I did not have my core anymore |

I remember you posting about that - that sucked. I had gotten mine after only a 2 day shipping wait, b/c I was buying it in the middle of Virginia, and the closest warehouse with one was in west virginia. Obviously the success depends on getting a good unit, the sad thing is that ALL of them are rebuilt units, pretty much no matter where you get it from. The dealer buys them from the same Mexico-built supplier that sends them to the parts stores. Obviously you got one that had a bad set of bearings in it, I got lucky and had good bearings. I will say that even on a common design like a 60's-to-early-00's Ford V8 where they have put that 302ci engine in just about everything that moved... I personally have replaced about 4 of those right after buying them on my own vehicles. Its a crap shoot, which is why they offer that lifetime replacement warranty. If the thing lasts a week, it will probably last a month. If it lasts that month... It will go the distance, at least on the bearings. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I usually don't get the core back to the shop for about a week or two. Its not any conscious choice to wait-and-see... But it just kinda happens that way I guess. |
