The '06 owners manual states that the front and rear axle fluid levels should be 1cm below the fill holes.

Other vehicles are filled until the gear oil just spills out. What is with Jeep?
How over-filled will the diff be if I just do it this way?

Massively. Both diffs will explode simultaneously from the pressure as if they were 500lb bombs and you will die screaming in the flaming wreckage of your Jeep. :grim:

Alternatively, just how will anyone accurately measure a level 1cm below the fill hole? I just check in the manual what the capacity of the diff is and put that amount of oil in.

Lancer that's not not descriptive enough, can you do better?

:lol:
Okay, I am a little obsessive - here comes more:

I read on another forum that if you jack up the rear, put the stands under the frame and let the axle hang, it changes the angle and you can fill to the hole.

Image

String to diff cover:
level = 1 13/16 inch
hanging = 1 15/16 inch

So this works. I don't think that this trick works on the front though.

They say not to fill it until it spills out because when you do, and the oil expands with temperature, you have oil sitting against the cheesy rubber plug, and it weeps a little. If you can live with the weeping, or you fill it while the axle is hanging as stated, then just fill to the rim. No biggie.

Or just put in what it says in the manual and then just drive for the next couple of thousand miles listening for the sounds of impending mechanical doom :lol:
