| Post subject: | A few questions |
Hi, New to the forum but have been driving my CRD 2.8 Jeep Cherokee (UK so Liberty shape) since new in 03. Anyway, couple of questions for you all. Firstly when I turn the ignition key one stage (where the lights a checks come on) I'm sure that I used to hear a buzz of an electric motor for a few seconds. Anyway, this has recently stopped (if it ever did happen!). Would anyone be so kind as to check on their Jeep whether there is such a noise or whether I'm going mad?! Also, my temp guage is reading at about 1/4 now. It used to reach between 1/4 and 1/2 way. Occasionally it will reach that but mostly it sits on the 1/4 mark. If I go fast for a while it will warm a little but generally I would say it's now running at the 1/4 mark consistently. Any thoughts on that? Finally, more noise issues - I noticed that when I switched the engine off that there was a very small whirring sound coming from the engine. Closer investigation lead me to a rubber pipe which was located close to the steering fluid reservoir. I disconnected the pipe and there was still sucking going on for a good few minutes after the engine was switched off. It eventually stopped but again I've not noticed that in the last nine years! Any thoughts on the above and what if anything I should do to correct the problems? I've had the car serviced regularly but not at a dealer recently. I'm thinking I might need specialist help from Jeep to get it back running smooth again. It certainly seems to be running a little rough and not as economical as it never was before! Thanks everyone! |

How many miles are on the vehicle? Re: startup buzz - I'm used to that being the ABS pump cycling during start up diagnostics. Re: engine temp @ 1/4 - sounds like a lot of us once the thermostat fails (it fails open). Re: vacuum - there's a reservoir used to drive the variable vanes in the turbo. Probably normal? Re: mileage - probably related to the thermostat. Also check: MAF (see air cleaner box), MAP (driver's side intake towards rear), air filter clean, and fuel filter clean. The fuel filter can cause you grief when it begins to restrict the fuel flow, as the Bosch CP3 on the engine creates a vacuum to pull it through the filter and all the way from the tank. Often, air is ingested at the fuel-tank / fuel-line fittings which were originally designed for a pressurized (gas) system; a lot of us put a fuel pump in the tank (or nearby) to address this. ? Engine temp at 1/4 is an easy one and common. Your thermostat is failed open. I don't have the link but a lot of us has used the stant thermostat. It's a $10 part from rock auto. I have no experience on the others |

Thanks for the responses. So should I be worried that I'm no longer hearing the ABS noise when I turn the ignition key? I'll get the thermostat looked at based on your input - I guessed it may have been that but I was concerned that it could have been other things too. The vehicle has done a little over 82000 miles. I bought her with about 2,000 miles back in 2003. It's been a good JEEP. I had the older Cherokee before and this one has been a lot more reliable up until now than that one. Although they're both great in their own way. |
