Driving lastnight a vibration started, in the steering wheel, also in the seat of my pants. This started on the interstate going 70 up a hill. This vibration comes and goes, but it seems linear with engine load. Also sometimes you can feel it both in the steering and seat, then just in the seat. I'm thinking either the motor mounts or possible a u-joint. With 75,000 miles both have never been replaced. When putting in gear I do not get a clunk which I would think would be a sign it is not the u-joints. Any thoughts, input? I know some members have had to replace motor mounts, around what is the mileage that they seem to go?

That really sounds like u-joints to me. They don't have to be loose and clunky to be bad. The more common failure mode around here is that one axis dries up and starts binding. You can't tell without taking the shaft off, but that's easy. If the vibration is felt in the seat of your pants, and varies more with engine load than road speed, it's probably the joints.

Bad motor mounts usually show up on this vehicle is a rattling noise from the engine bay when stopped. Worse in gear than in park.

Thanks CATCRD,
Yes it goes with engine load and not road speed. No new noise under the hood, running either in or out of gear. The motor mounts design is new to me, so was not sure if they maybe going. Remember a mini van the ex had, when the mounts went on that, when you put it in gear the engine looked like it was going to lay on the ground.

Same thing happened to mine in the 70K ish zone. I replaced front and rear u-joints with the XHD Precision brand units with greasable zerts. Every oil change have them shot and they will last practically forever.
