After vehicle shopping for a few months, I finally found something that I feel in love with. I bought an 2005 Liberty with the 2.8L in it with 91xxx miles. Decided I had to have it and signed papers for it. Three days after buying, it is running horrible. After replacing all the o-rings and copper washers on it it finally runs like a champ. I have noticed though that i am very slowly losing coolant now. No puddles or signs of leaking any idea where it could be going? |

OH OH. That doesn't sound good. Is the puddle under the passenger side? |

First check the oil. If its milky, its your head gasket...or worse, a cracked head. If there is no evidence there, start looking internally. Check the carpet by the passengers side. If its wet, check for leaks at/around the heater core. If you don't find anything from those two suggestions, i would recommend getting an oil analysis and a leak down test on the system. |

A slow coolant loss can be in lots of places and may be harmless or may be bad news as racertracer knows and hints at. IMHO the first step (before looking for the worst internally although a quick oil dip stick check won't hurt), assuming you don't see fluid on the ground, is to go to your local parts store and obtain some UV coolant leak detector dye and a UV light (total cost $10-15) and a spray can of engine degreaser if your engine is dirty (take off the plastic engine cover and look at the top). Follow the degreaser instructions but under no circumstances use a high pressure spray of water as part of the process, rinse is the name of the game for water, as some folks who have used high pressure have produced electrical problems due to water in various connections. Once that's done add the UV dye, on a cool engine, to the plastic tank on the firewall and drive for several days or a total of like 50-100 miles or whatever interval it takes for you to see loss of coolant based on the level in the tank. Then use the UV light, you may have to do this inside a garage on under less than bright sunlight, to look for signs of a leak checking all hose fittings, thermostat gasket and temp sensor, radiator, the oil cooler on the passenger side, the hoses to and from the EGR on the back driver's side, under and around the plastic tank on the firewall, etc. I've seen leaks, totally undetectable but for UV, that were just tiny drips, evaporating as fast as they appeared, at factory hose spring clamps. If that basic approach doesn't work you then you need to start looking for other things using other methods including leak down tests and checks for coolant in the oil. PS turn your heater on full blast and see if the heated air smells odd or if the drip from the heater/AC drain, don't know exactly where this is on the CRD but it will be somewhere relatively low on the firewall on the passenger side, tastes sweet like antifreeze to see if your heater core is leaking. Welcome to the forum, be sure to read Sam's NOOB guide and remember that you timing belt needs to be replaced at 100K miles even if you can only afford to do the belt which as a DIY project costs ca. $75 and 5-6hrs with tools you can rent from GDE or help from other members depending on your location. It's good to do all the other stuff related to a TB change but the belt is the most critical. |

Oil isn't milky just soot black lol. Can't find a sticker so i bought 0-40 synthetic Mobil 1 today for an oil change. Heater works great and no dripping inside the cab so me and my brother are going go run a pressure check on the cooling system this weekend. I have also read the noob guide. Its a great way to kick things off. It's filled with tons of great information. |

I had a coolant leak that was the side oil cooler - under the Turbo (folks forget about that) only needed a new gasket. I also had a minor coolant leak - that was a cracked head - replaced under extended warranty.... |

So today I finally had time to tend to my CRD. My brother (a gas burner mechanic) and I got the jeep in the shop and ran a pressure test on the cooling system to find that a Y in one of the hoses was leaking caused by a hose clamp that was on the weak side. So we replaced it and couldn't find any other leaks, so I'm praying that's all that was wrong. The reason it wasn't dripping on the ground is because the good ol' skid plate was catching the antifreeze. While in the shop I cleaned the MAP, changed the oil, and unplugged the MAF. The air filter looked brand new, but I will still replace just so i know when it was done. Come pay day I am changing the fuel filter and probably using some kind of additive to clean the system. Any suggestions on the additive I should use? Also are y'all running 0-40 or 5-40 oil? And since its a synthetic how many miles on a change on average? Sorry I'm still new to the whole diesel thing. |

I know there are those that say you can go longer but IMHO oil is cheap and engines/turbos are expensive so I won't go more than 6,000 mi between oil and filter changes. FYI the oil dip stick tends to be inaccurate. Correct fill amounts are 6.3qts for stock filter size and 7qts for oversize filter then see where that is on your dip stick. Also be sure that the synthetic oil you get is diesel rated, not all of them are. Glad your coolant leak was about what I expected. Nothing wrong with using biodiesel to clean the system but if you do I'd be inclined to use something in the range of B10-20 and do so before changing your fuel filter. Bio apparently has a tendancy to loosen stuff in the tank/lines and clog filters so might as well do that on the filter you have and not a brand new one but if you do use the brand new filter best have an extra on hand just in case. |

I'm from a little town lol. I would probably have to drive 60+ miles to find biodiesel. So how about something like seafoam or howls? Any suggestions |

In that case I use DieselKleen in the silver bottle from time to time. |

I got to take my jeep out in the snow for the first time today. It did amazing! I'm on a volunteer fire dept and used the jeep on two calls today. One was out in the middle of nowhere, but the Libby didn't care. I've got a stupid question though. I have heard about trac lock but I'm not positive on what it is. I know it is like a differential lock but how do you tell if you have it? I'm pretty sure my jeep has positract. Is that common with the liberty's? I know these are basic questions but they have me wondering |
