Anyone interested in a busted CRD. Dealer says cracked block, no word as to cause. I'm frankly tired of it and not sure I want to pursue used (unknown) engine, etc. :banghead:

BTW I have been around here for a few years as a lurker.

How many miles on the rig?

Where is the rig located?

Year, Limited, Sport?

Artisanstone, do you know what lead to the engine failure?

-around 125,000 (yes timing belt was done)
-South Carolina
-2006 sport
-Don't know cause. I will call dealer today. The message was relayed to me through my wife. Dealer said new engine $12,000, no used engines available to him.

Cracked block? Yea... Unless he can produce pictures or you can see that yourself, I'm calling BS.

If you have been lurking here, you know of my entertaining sagas for the forum, and I can tell you with incredible certainty - This is a BRICK of a block, you can hardly hope to do that kind of damage with C-4.

Pistons leaving abruptly, through the oil pan? Sure, had it happen. Head warping from overheating / coolant leaking? Talk to Racer. Cylinder liner getting beaten into shrapnel by the rod (as the piston was leaving)... Yup!

None of this hurt that block.

I'm in Savannah, where in SC are you? Something is decidedly fishy about this, unless the dealer can be more forthcoming with information. I wouldn't expect them to be, OR to get it right in 6 guesses as to what day of the week it is. Dealers are notoriously good at upselling to the most expensive parts, in hope you will simply buy another chitbox from them.

If block is cracked, ask the technician to show you where the crack occured.

Also ask the dealer if they have a VM qualified diesel technician on board that would be able to work on your CRD if you so choose.

i dont know alot about crd motor, but it is a wet sleeve design that can leak coolant around sleeve in to oil etc to
simulate cracked block. the dealer probably doesn't know the liner/sleeve piston assembly can be replaced in the block

Update- The dealer says it is either the head gasket or a cracked head. That's a lot different than a cracked block! Anyway, I'm still interested to unload it. I have neither the time nor the patience right now to deal with it. To those who have inquired, the jeep is at Benson Chrysler/Jeep in Greer, SC.

I would really like some feedback from the CRD community as to value before I talk to interested parties. I would like to be fair with pricing, but still get rid of it. Condition:
-It's been my wife's primary driver for 60,000 miles with two toddlers. I invested in nice floor mats and seat covers from the beginning, so the interior is still fair to good.
-Exterior, minor scratches in paint at most. No dents, dings, etc.
-All windows, central locking, etc. work correctly.
-Transmission has always performed like new.
-It probably needs ball joints, shocks, etc. The two front tires have worn badly in 20,000 miles.
-It did have some glitches in the abs system. (lights flashing occasionally probably wiring related)
-It's been slowly eating coolant. (the head I assume) Low coolant light every two weeks or so.
-The only other problem we've had was a mysterious no-start condition, which turned out to be a bad battery. It now has the premium NAPA replacement.

So, with all that said, what is your opinion on the value???

Fixing the engine will be from $2500 to $5000 depending on how parts are procurred. This will most likely cut your value in half from the average selling price. It might turn into a parts vehicle for someone. Hope it turns out well.

post some pic's let us take a look at it. Everyone could use a parts truck. I been looking a one will a wiring fire with 42000 miles. I paid $4400 for mine a couple of months ago. Transfer case was bad and needed a timing belt.
Cost was $1800. for both.

The truck doesn't show very well in these pictures. It's dirty, and we were not planning on it breaking down, being stuck at the dealer, etc. I am open to offers on it.

There is no extra charge for the special racing edition tires. :D

Synopsis- the dealer has made it clear that he is not sure what is wrong. Probably head gasket or damaged head. The jeep has not been torn apart for further diagnosis. I just don't want to pour more time and money into it. I've put it on craigslist with a starting price, but I am very open to negotiation. I thought all CRDs came with fog lights. I've never seen one without.

I don't recall that my original 05 Sport CRD, victim of dump truck, had fog lights. Given the limited number of CRDs provided to the US market I suspect most came "well" equiped so most but not all did have fog lights.

Post subject:  Re: Another one down.

Fog lights are and option on most every jeep. Even some limiteds came without them but yes most CRD were either really well equipped or really plain.

FWIW I'm parting out my 2005 CRD with a good engine with 84k miles on it.
