Broke down in new Orleans last Saturday . Vehicle driving fine then next thing I know it feels like the engine is about to fly outta the truck, I pulled over and shut her down in less than a 1/4 mile. My crappy roadside assist would only tow to a dealer. Got word from dealer that #3 injector bad and needs replaced before they are able to start engine and see if there is any other issues, gave them the go-ahead for the $1500.00 parts and labor ( I live 200 miles away so was bent over a barrel on this one |

My guess is their guess they quoted $9k for an engine !! But there is a lot of lil things it could be before give up the beast ! They say it started and ran good for 5 mins before shutting down and not restarting, had that happen just a few months ago and it was an air pocket in the fuel line. So keeping my hopes up but can't do much till I get her towed back home . |

If it cranks over normally and doesn't make bad noises or do anything you haven't heard before... It IS NOT THE ENGINE. Bad timing job (I don't think it is this) the engine would make bad sounds, not crank, or crank WAY faster b/c the belt isn't holding everything together. Pretty much everything else (head gasket problems, etc) wouldn't prevent it from cranking, and also wouldn't cause you to need a new block. |

Tales like this confirm to me that the problem was never our libbys, it was the huge incompetence from the chrysler mechanics and support!!!! I hope you are sitting when you discover it was not really a bad problem...... good luck. |

I think you are right on the incompetence , I'm heading out tomorrow to pay for work done and gonna just try a few things before I call for the tow truck, am hoping it's something quirky like an air bubble in the fuel filter ( that happened to me a few months back... No reason just wouldn't start, bled the filter and presto engine gtg ) will keep you posted. Once I get it back here to home I have my car guy lined up to look at it ( not a dealership ) |

They prolly tried to change the spark plugs and then came to that conclusion when they thought they were missing. Seriously, I hope you figure it. I would also refuse to pay 1500 for one injector. Thats just me, but I think that could be considered robbery. |

Well got to the jeep and found out that they tech was in the process of doing the fuel qty adjustment test when the motor made a loud noise then locked up We put some jumper cables on just in case batt was drawn down from trying to start, still nothin. We could see the pulleys move about 1/8 inch then it stops |

P0670 Glow plug Ctrl Circ Error P1140 Engine intake valve timing sensor P0562 Battery voltage low P0299 Turbo/Super charger underboost P0725 Speed Input Circuit Malfunction Here is my guess and it is only a guess: Broken glow plug trashed your injector and possibly a valve. |

Sounds like it could be the engine is Hydrostatic Locked. If that is the case all fluid must be removed from the cylinder/ cylinders intake ect. Do not try and use the starter to turn the motor over. Severe damage can or could have happen. I would have all injectors removed and see if any cylinders are wet. Could be the tech that replaced the injector may have messed up. I hope that I am wrong. But just my thoughts. If that did happen alot of parts could be trashed in the motor, |

MUCH easier option to check for hydro locking from a leaking injector: pull all 4 glow plugs and THEN turn the motor by hand. It rotates clockwise as you are looking at it. Pulling the plugs will serve two purposes very quickly and easily: prove whether a plug is snapped off (which will answer if that caused the problem) and completely remove any compression, so turning the motor will ONLY be moving the rotating assembly and any fuel will have a place to escape to. I think you will find the problem by doing this, or at least eliminate a couple possibilities. If the engine was running and then locked / died... That could be a broken belt or jammed valve, but in my experience, the engine might still rotate with broken rockers... Just no vroom b/c the top end is shrapnel. This is bad, but not catastrophic. The engine is DESIGNED to kill the rockers only, instead of bending valves. We did have one member here whose engine swallowed a valve and jammed, but I don't think that happened in your case. It seems too random. Several have had problems from broken plug tips, which is a much more common failure. |

Well it's not looking good , only managed to remove glow plugs 1 and 4 couldn't get to 2 and 3 and was running out of daylight. But glow plug 1 is broken off at bottom 4 was ok. Manually turned engine then drained oil. Well definitely blown the head gasket as all my coolant spewed out of the oil pan So it looks like right now that #3 fuel injector was stuck open and caused the blown head gasket. The #1 glow plug had been spitting out a fault since July last year but was waiting for the 7 volt metal plugs to be available before replacing them. I live in Florida so didn't think it to be a big deal. Now I gotta try and figure out how much this beast is honna take to fix, I'm guessing a head gasket replacement is going to he expensive !! |

Where in Florida? If you are anywhere near South Florida, I can recommend an honest shop that knows ALL about assembling and disassembling a CRD motor - mine. They are in Deerfield Beach, on the East coast. |

$9K for a new engine is BS. Mine was $8300 with a new turbo, new GP's and a new TC. |

Melanie, You may not need a new head, the shop should detemrine if your head is reusable. When I got my cylinder head replaced, i also had the timing belt and misc. parts replaced and the total cost was between $2,600 - $2,700 from the dealer. My cylinder head was a used one that I purchased from a LostKjs member for $350 delivered. If you use a remanufactured head from Chrysler, it will cost $600 to $800 dollars more. And if you don't need the timing belt parts becasue you recently done the work, then the cost should be less. Choose wisely and take your time when it comes to a qualified mechanic/shop that will work on your vehicle. We do not own a gasser with parts that are readily available, we own a diesel that requires more attention and one thing all of us should realize is that a repair like this will need time to complete. 1. The time required to source out a qualified mechanic/repair shop. 2. The time required for the preliminary "investigative exploratory surgery" to determine what failed and what parts will be needed. 3. The time needed to source the required parts from a reputable parts house at a fair price. 4. The lead time required for the parts to arrive 5. The time required for the mechanic to complete the work. This could add up to weeks. |
