Post subject:  Low oil - no leak

I had an oil change 3500 miles ago. I put in 6.5 qts of mobile 1 0w40. Oil level was good on the dip stick. I had the jeep up on the lift today to assess a knock on the drivers side front suspension and i noticed some oil sprayed on/around the cv axle. We dropped the skid plate and found it saturated with oil. I searched everywhere and everything above the cv was dry. I checked the front differential oil level and it was a little low. It appears that the leak is coming from the seal in the differential where the cv slides in. We lowered the jeep and checked the oil level to be sure....and the dipstick was bone dry. It took 1.5 qts to come back to level. I have no smoke on startup or under acceleration. It never burned oil before. I did however install the GDE hot just after the last oil change. Ill keep an eye on it, but i have no idea where the oil is going. Can there be that much being sent through the ccv?

Sounds like two problems:

1. got a gear lube leak from the front diff as evidenced by the oil at diff and CV

2. Engine is using oil, no evidence on the outside of the engine identified yet.

My engine has always used oil, I think its a combination of; out the CCV and I see as a discharge from my EHM in the driveway pavement; and just used/burned by the engine. I used to have to add a 1/2 quart every 1000 miles, but the quanity has decreased the more miles I've put on the engine. Now I top off maybe a quart total over 5000 mile oil change interval and rarely see any oil drops in the driveway anymore.

Remember that if u have a stock filter it is 6.3 quarts and if u have the bigger m1-301 filter it will hold 7 quarts. With that our dipsticks aren't accurate. I use the bigger filter, and the first time I changed my oil I put in 7 quarts and then marked my dipstick and then go by that. With the seven quarts I'm a little below full according to my dipstick. Any more it will just go out the ccv. Funny, the first time I changed my oil, the amount coming out my ehm was less(I don't have a gde tune yet)

How far do you drive? Diesels "Cold Stack" meaning that they will actually suck oil and burn it until the rings get warm. If you do a lot of short trips and never really warm it up, you will be burning a little oil.

Run your finger in the exhaust pipe (when it is cold) and if it is black and powdery it is OK, if it is wet you may be burning more oil that you should.

I have the wix 51515. So I'll credit that for 1/2 a quart or more. The rest I will attribute to cold starts. Thanks for the info. I'll keep an eye on it to confirm these were the cause.

What oil brand and weight oil are you using? Mobil 0-40w? I started using 5-40W on my last oil change and now after 1000miles I was a qt low, I was using Rotella 5-40w until now and had not had that problem. Also, when Mobil synthetic first introduced (30 plus years ago), if you started using it with 60000+ miles on a gas engine, the valve cover, oil pan gaskets would leak....

Anyone else see this problem?

The WIX 51515 is oversize (stock size WIX is 51516) and takes 7qts for a full fill vs 6.3 qts for stock. I'm personally fond of the Shell Rotella T-6 as it meets the more recent API diesel standards, nothing wrong with a CF rating but it's outdated, plus it's generally cheaper than the Mobile1

X2 on the older experience. I first tried Mobile1 back when it was new and a gas engine that used zero oil in a 3k change interval started using 2-3 extra qts which was big hit to a starving grad student's budget. Problem went away after 2 changes with regular old dino oil. Guess seals just were not upt o synthetic back then.

The dip stick does not say FULL as in where it should be :SOMBRERO:

It says MAX and that is short for MAXIMUM that Webster describes as "the greatest quantity possible" :JEEPIN:

Also it takes a long while for all the oil to drain completely down. Best to check it before starting it first thing in the morning after it's set all night :BINGO:

Yes thirty years ago synthetic oil caused seals to leak. That problem was corrected 25 years ago with better seals :google:
