The power is down, clouds of black smoke when I put the pedal to the metal.
Check engine light came on.
The plan:
1. Go to Autozone for code check.
2. Check turbo hoses.
3. Change fuel filter.

Any other ideas?

Skip the trip to AutoZone unless you have a CEL from something other than the ORM.

Black smoke is made when you have more fuel than air, so your fuel filter is just fine. Don't waste money there unless it is time.

I would check the hoses first. That is free, and the most likely suspect. Don't feel too bad about it if it is the hoses, I hammered down on mine tonight and I thought I could hear an air leak too, and boost seemed down a bit while EGT was approaching 1500. Boost only made it to 21, post intercooler. I'm pretty sure I have a leaking hose from the turbo, it has been wet and oily again on the outside, while the oil supply CCV has NOT been anywhere near it. I think the hose has become porous.

If your hoses are growing hair from all the filth on them, there is a VERY good chance they are leaking boost right through the walls, even if not completely torn open. But that is just a matter of time too.

What geordi said :)

I see you have SAMCO CAC listed on your Jeep but maybe they have blown or come loose :?

I had my samco CAC pop off the turbo coming away from a stop light a couple weeks ago (it made a loud POP/HISSSSSS) after which the jeep drove exactly like what you're describing. I only went about 100 yds further to turn off onto a side road to see stop and see what happened.

A few minutes of work with a towel to wipe it clean and a screw driver to clamp it back on took care of it. So x3 on check those hoses.

Guys,
Thanks,
I pulled the plastic engine cover to examine the labyrinth, found nothing out of place.
Could be down low.
Have been driving the pickup, put new O2 sensors in it, runs like new....4.8l, V8, but the daughter is on leave from the Marines so I better get it figured out.

Boy am i slow.
Did the code reading at Auto Zone.
Underboost condition, P0299 and P1250(x2)

Assuming the hoses are OK, isn't that when the turbo actuater is not working through the full range?

P1250 is a "not plausible" condition in your vacuum solenoid that provides vacuum to the turbo evm. The part number is 4606226AC if you want a new one or you can also by-pass the unit by re-routing the vacuum hose from the reservoir directly to the turbo ECM (vacuum modulator with little air filter on bottom).

Thanks Keith.
Let me see if I can figure this out.
I miss the Hot flash power.

Any chance the vanes inside the turbo are stuck?

Just a thought.

Thanks Green Diesel Engineering!!
Went out today and switched the hoses around on the solenoid and wha-la, turbo works magic!!!!
Now i better clean the MAP sensor to get the full effect, it has been a while.
