Hello everyone. Franticly searching to find a TRUSTED mechanic in the VAB area, for our 2005 Lib CRD. The primary driver, my significant other lives out in the beach area while I work about 4 1/2 hrs inland. I have tried to stress the point of finding a knowledgable mechanic ahead of time.. but it runs, so she drives..lol

Last week she had a brake line rub through (should be a recall issue..?) $430 dollars later she brought the jeep home (inland) to find that some idiot with a wrench, cut a hole in her inner fenderwell to route the brake line, about the size of a small baseball glove.. then took the front bumper cover off anyways, and put half the fasteners back in durring reinstall. I could jiggle the cover with the press of a finger when she got home with it. Lucky it didnt fall off on the interstate.

Though Id like to find someone thats a CRD Pro., I would just be content to find a great affordable ASE Tech that is trusted and well known.

Thanks Everone in advance!
Love to meet some Jeep friends out here too!

Reg & Kae :)

Was the damage to the brake line directly inboard of the rear tires? Did both brake lines suffer damage?

Wow, what incompetence. You might consider having the mechanic who repairs the damage take pictures and write it up so you can send the bill to the owner of the other shop...

Even a dealer would be better - though when you're down and stranded I know you don't always have the luxury of choice.

Good luck with the search.. is there something like Angie's list where you live? I found a great transmission shop that way, here in the Portland OR area.

Im not sure about the specific location of the brake line issue.. rained the day b4 she drove back to VAB, but I do plan to crawl under it tonight when she gets off work. Im planning to go see the shop that did the work and quite possibly tell the guy to find a new profession..

I like to work on the vehicle myself whenever I get the opportunity. But hoping that I could find someone w/a CRD to lend me a hand.

Thanks!
Reg

Fortunately, brake lines are in common with gassers (patooie!), so finding a competent local mechanic shouldn't be as difficult as would be the case if it were CRD specific (e.g. engine related).

Someone familiar with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep products would be nice... ; ' )

As for help, bit of a drive from Portland OR.. sorry. I hope you find someone nearby - always nice to have someone to bring a cold one and kibbutz...

Replacements for the front and right-rear are easy to come by and inexpensive.

Left-rear appears to be custom and costs $400+ at the dealer. Best I've found aftermarket for that one is about $260.

From what I can tell, they crimped the hard-line to rubber junction rather than using the usual removable fitting. The dealer said that because it's a custom part the supplier can charge whatever they'd like.

I plan to use a local shop and convert that junction to a standard fitting so that I can replace it (in the future) with a $20 part for Cost-less auto... ; ' )

I wonder if that's the one - and since it wasn't in stock the whole mess was an attempt to do your wife a favor and get her back on the road with a jury-rigged unit? Or maybe save time by not having to disassemble as much for the correct install..

Intentions may be golden, but the mechanic sounds like a road-hazard. I'd be concerned about safety given the description of the other work done.

Well the easiest way to find a reputable mechanic would be find your local Bosche injector pump rebuilder. An Internet search should turn up one close and then ask then for some good diesel mechanics in the area.

UPDATE: After she returned home from work, we proceeded to go visit the shop that did the work. In an interesting turn of events, come to find out that they had reused the plastic fastners and witch did not hold. When Kae drove home (inland) 4 1/2 hrs, the air pushing through the bumper and grill pressed down on the leading side of the inner fenderwell, pushing it against the tire to wear completely through it.. never would have guessed..
At the shop, the drivers side did the same thing sometime later (most likely from her return trip to VAB). So both fender wells had huge wear through holes!
The shop said that thet would order and install new fender wells, as well as new fasteners for wells and bumpers.. They also said that I would have to sign a no-liability agreement that if after the parts where replaced, i could not return again with any issues..lol
I asked if I should expect the same kind of craftsmanship in the actual brake line install.. the location manager said he would oversee it..

The line- was a crossover line to the passenger front wheel brake booty, from the master cyl junction block. Point of failure was from the upper air cooler hose flexing with engine movement and rubbing on the brake line. Cant believe thats not a recall item!

Hope you've all enjoyed my short story :)
Thanks for all the info and help too!
