Post subject:  Help, professional advice sought.

Some may know this post from another forum, but alas I thought it couldn't hurt to ask here as well.

I just took delivery of a 2006 CRD with 75,000 miles on it. I bought the vehicle sight unseen (maybe dumb) but I'd really asked a lot of questions, and for the most part the dealer (Holt at DFW) was pretty honest. But, for one thing I've discovered.

I noticed some oil residue, on the tubes for the AC running along the top of the radiator housing, near the hood latch, and thought what a strange place for crankcase oil...so I looked around, and then looked up under the hood, and the insulation blanket was soaked with oil. My theory is that at some point the vehicle was driven with the oil fill cap missing.

My question is two fold, does anyone think enough oil was lost, that there was damage to the engine? And secondly, how could one tell if there was damage to the engine?

It seems to start fine, though never have seen the glow plug light come on at all, turns over more than my 2003 VW TDI did before starting, but runs strong, and sounds for the most part "normal" but for a slight clicking and sounds to be once every revolution as opposed to once every cylinder fires.

Thanks much...

From you're description of how the engine sounds and performs, I doubt any damage occured.

Although a good quality sound bite or video with sound of the motor running would be a good thing for us to listen to so that we can get a better I idea of what is going on.

Thank you much, here's a link to a video with sound. I tried to isolate the ticking sound, but it may only be an injector or the pump itself, I.E. normal.

I've left the cap off once - made quite the mess, but the dipstick dropped surprisingly little.

The audio I hear in the youtube video sounds normal to me.

Sounds no different than mine and seems to vibrate a little less than mine too.
