I noticed that Cherry Bomb shows a Vortex exhaust kit on their website that is made to fit Jeep CRD's (p/n: 300616) Wondering if anyone has installed one, and if its worth buying?

Thanks

on a diesel, the best exhaust you can get, performance wise is just a straight pipe. DIesels don't need any back pressure and a straight pipe provides the best flow through.. plus the turbo whistle and grunt from a straight pipe actually make it sound like a diesel :JEEPIN:

I myself just lopped off the muffler and put straight piping in it's place, i kept the resonator/oxidation catalyst, but in the futuure i plan on redoing the entire exhaust with 3 inch piping after the headers.

is anyone out there making a turbo back system for these things? i cant find one anywhere. figured i would check here as a last resort before i go have one custom made. going to look at a 3 inch pipe with a 3 in/out mbrp or hushpower muffler. im getting over 43 mpg on the highway at 1500 rpm. trying for that 45 mpg number

tires are stock size, yes hand calculated. ive been off grid with no internet lately sorry. looking at 45 mpg now at 50-55 mph in 5th gear. everything is flat where i live im going to try to put together an exhaust with a welded fitting to allow ccv to exit through exhaust. catch cans smell like stupid and gasses in my face while driving are not pleasant. new fuel filter is getting picked up here in a few minutes and il pick up some atf full synthetic. if i could control my vb shifts electronically i could get more fuel economy. im looking for a used air intake elbow as well so i can get some ideas on injectables. i need to post a picture of my wiring. im very concerned with the previous owners intentions. i have solid yellow? 16ga wire? coming from drivers side to the pass side tcm( i think thats the one i replaced on the pass side). anyway, doesnt look like a dealer mod. overall i like this little thing. place i bought it from had to replace the rear pinion seal so im not sure if it has driveshaft wear or anything else. been crying over the cummins being down for 4 months lol it might as well be my wife. oh also been adding about 5 oz of 2 stroke at fillups. sometimes half fillup sometimes on empty. need to try revX oil add and possibly hot shots sercret oil add before i do anything else to ensure whatever is in there comes out. idling has been a little rough till warmup and now that egr is disabled i think it might help. aslo trying to decide which gauges to get, edge, scangauge.. ect. need to know what fuel pressure looks like. might add the cummins stock fuel pump to the jeep. need specs on jeeps common rail pump first. u guys let me know what you think and take care

I use the cherry bomb and love it. It sounds great little to no back pressure in the cherry bomb and sounds great. Plus I got mine for a little more then 200.

was thinking a 3 inch mbrp or hushpower full flow. 3 inch all the way would be nice. maybe i should salvage the 3 inch stuff on the cummins haha. i need a tig welder. by the way just got done with the new fuel filter, easiest thing i ever done. was surprised being an 05 and all. new vehicles kick my rear end sometimes. anyway, what are you guys seeing with the transgo? any good? i do believe i would absolutely love a manual shift in this thing. need to decide soon since im so close to suncoast and i plan on leaving soon. i hear they got a sweet vb and tc for the rfe

If you've found a way to get that kind of mileage in a 4300 lb. SUV, you've solved the fuel crisis. Sorry, but I find it hard to believe 43 or 45 mpg unless it's all downhill.

Well do the suncoast TC and transgo. I mean you will have to drop the tranny to get the suncoast in might as well drop the transgo kit in while it is out and easy to work on. And if you do the 3 inches all the way back you will have to build yourself a new down pipe or you big exhaust is just that a big exhaust.

The only way you might get that kind of mileage is coasting down a mountain or drafting close behind an 18-wheeler. :ROTFL:

dont be like some of the idiots on the cummins forum. if u cant believe that its possible to take a 5k pound vehicle and get 45 mpg with what, 300+ lbs of torque, then somethings wrong with you. thats like the guy that told me its impossible to get 50 plus mpg with a truck. try a lowered ram 1500 with a 12 valve cummins. people build things like this every day. call garmons diesel performance, they would love to laugh at you when you tell them they are wrong. if you really want to see it come to pensacola florida and we will take a trip together to my house in panama which is exactly 114 miles. and when i show you the numbers on paper you can laugh at the proof all you want. you guys talk alot of talk but ill still be here seeing numbers like 28-30 mpg in town haha 8473448033

I draft off the trucks all the time, and I'm a crazy highway driving fool... That mileage number would be great for a JETTA, much less a Jeep that weighs in close to twice as much. Something doesn't compute.

So the other hundreds of us that get in the 25 to 32 mpg range are idiots, but you are the lone CRD owner getting 45. Do you see why it doesn't add up?

It's not about the torque numbers. It's that diesel fuel has 138,000 btu/gal and that energy can only do so much work in an internal combustion engine. It's physics, pure and simple.

Fine, I'll bite.

First - My resume: I took a Chevy 454 gas powered 6 ton RV with NO OVERDRIVE from a 6 mpg vehicle... To an upgraded and upsized exhaust system with headers and everything behind them, new BIG 800cfm carburetor, air intake system, deleted clutch fan (replaced with lightweight flex fan and no clutch) serpentine belt conversion, airpump delete... air / fuel ratio gauges in the exhaust pipes and a LOT of jetting work in the carb... To an RV that now gets 9mpg on the highway at the same speed, and 10mpg when drafting behind a truck. I called up BANKS ENGINEERING (As in Gale Banks, THE MAN when it comes to this stuff) and after speaking with his engineering guys for a while and stepping them through every single thing I had done on this RV... Their answer was that they couldn't sell me a single product - I had already gone PAST what their results had been. A 50% increase in mileage, unheard of for a vehicle this size.

So... What have you done to this CRD to get it to 45mpg? Tell me everything, I'm honestly asking and genuinely want to know. No sarcasm or judgement here. I've had in my mind for a long time (and no money to do it) a plan for getting a high torque engine to ridiculous mileage numbers, but it involves a lot more technical knowledge than I have had each time I pull that idea out of the back of my mind and play with it.

The only way I see getting close to 45 mpg is to drop the CRD to just about 2 to 3 inches above the ground. Remove the front diff and everything that goes with it. New 3 inch exhaust and downpipe and GDE turbo tune ( oh do I want one so badly). Then strip the back seat out and any armor you have. And then build you some super slick skid plates from a lighter material just to cut down on wind resistance even more. Then you will probably have to skirt it with something. Also you will need a custom intake and a few other things done to the motor but I could talk about this all day long. But basically to get 45 you end up with a jette on steroids and not a jeep.

OK, one question that goes a bit more to topic. Will straight piping lead to any gains in power or fuel economy? or is it just a different noise?

Not really... It cuts the backpressure by removing the cat restriction and the smaller neck-down that the pipe does right by the entrance to the cat. If you replace the muffler (70 lbs) with a much lighter all-metal design from somebody like Magnaflow or Flowmaster, you will increase the flow while massively cutting the weight.

Nonexistent backpressure will allow the CRD to coast more effectively, which will allow you to lift your foot out earlier and let Sir Isaac Newton pay part of your fuel bill, which will help a bit, but it isn't going to be a "I can get 4mpg by removing my exhaust!" kind of change.

Less exhaust pressure also means that the turbo will be able to spool easier, and the engine won't be pushing against itself to make your power, so it should save a little fuel there too. Finally, by not having that backpressure, the exhaust system will run cooler, which will let the engine move more cold air through, keeping the engine cooler, and more efficient b/c it won't be needing to try and eject that heat through the radiator, possibly heating the intercooler at the same time.

Another tiny performance / efficiency benefit, maybe... But will it show on anything other than a butt-dyno? I don't know. I think the most gains are from the easier coasting and the reduction in weight. EVERYTHING Chrysler built on this Jeep is FAR heavier than it needs to be... Except the suspension and stock tires. THOSE, they cheaped out.

What i noticed most by chopping the muffler off was the turbo spools much quicker. and it sounds leaps and bound better. like an actual diesel when you floor it
