I searched many times and still dont know, please don't flame; my 05 CRD started humming from front end last week, gets louder with speed, turn left sharply it goes away some, turn right, gets louder. Gets very loud from 65 on up. Initially it was only at 70mph but every day it's gotten worse. I drive about 100 miles a day for work. Many say it's the CV axles or the hubs/bearings but I just changed them 5K ago. Brakes are not grinding on either side and are evenly worn. Sliders are fine as well. The only thing I notice is that the drivers side hub does not turn freely like the passengers, it is very hard to turn. Boots are fine on CVs also.. Could it be a bearing inside the axle differential? I checked the fluid and it is clean and full. The sound just came out of nowhere. I did not take the differential apart as time does not permit until the weekend but then again what am I looking for? Paul |

Well...I dunno. What you could try, (very carefull) is put the KJ up on blocks and engage 4x4, then listen around the front end. Have someone sitting behind the wheel so it won't run you over in case it falls of the blocks... |

I've got the same issue, I'm going to drop the front drive shaft this evening and see if the vibration goes away. |

Sounds like the front driver's side wheel bearing/hub. Maybe the new one you put in had a defect. |

When you say the "hub" does not turn freely do you mean the wheel when off the ground? If so the front brakes are know for hanging up due to swelling in sleeves associated with the brake assembly (I've not seen the sleeves but there is lots of chat about this). If the brakes get hot quickly on that wheel this could be part of your problem. Other sources CV joints (usually sound somewhat different depending on turn direction but when I've had CV joints go the noise has been more like clicking); wheel bearings also sound different depending on direction of loading. Could also be drive shaft "U" joints which are another common source of noise. Doesn't sound like motor mounts though. GDE has a point. |

Just a word of experience, just because it is new off the shelf does not mean it is any good. I have gotten new parts bad right out of the box. Just something to think about.

Yes I mean when the wheel is off the ground, it'as almost impossible to turn, and I DO have the caliper and brakes off of it when I try. The CV is making no noise(then again couldn't really turn it, lol). I remember clicking before I replaced it. I'm kinda thinking its the DS or the drivers side hub, as everyone is suggesting. They wern't the most expensive hubs I bought |

what brand of bearing did you buy. Sometimes price is an issue to buy the cheap one. It's just me, but I will only buy either a wheel hub with Timkin or National bearings for domestics. |

Going through the same issue currently. Noisy at highway speed, goes away as you slow down. I have deduced that it is the LF wheel hub bearing; that's what I changing first anyway. I ordered one from Car Quest, it will be here Thursday. He said that there are two (2) different grades and that the less expensive ones do not hold up, especially if the vehicle is 4WD. The cost for the upgrade/premium unit is $230.00. Make sure to tell them if you have 2-wheel, 4-wheel or no ABS. If you have a Limited, you should have 4-wheel ABS. Hope this helps. FWIW, Hoosier CRD |

Just finished, for me it turned out to be both the drivers side unit bearing and the CV axle. Changed out hub first, and it fixed the hum, changed out the CV drive shaft and and the vibration is gone. Still feel a little something more than I think I should so I'm going to order a right side hub and axle and change them out as well. I inspected the front drive shaft and it still looks good, boot at the xfer case still in place, not cracked. Unit bearing is a Timken. Got the CV Drive shaft from Advanced Auto, because they could get it today. Was a little hesitant as everyone else has been using Napa rebuilts. Brand is GSP, part is new, not rebuilt. I'm kind of impressed. Boots are visibly thicker than OEM, and the drive shaft fit like a glove. Only issue was the included c-clip was incorrect. I just used the one off the old drive shaft. 114k and these are all original parts that were changed out on my CRD. |

Paul I you got those front hubs from ebay then replace the one you suspect from again!!! been there done that, why do you think they so cheap compare to OEMs? |

For what its worth, I have found that partsgeek.com has had (by far) the lowest online prices it you dont need your part right away. I bought both front Monroe sensatrac quick struts for my wifes camry from there for 132ea. Advanced wanted 320ea. Was identical part number. |

Ok, Changed out both sides and its finally quiet. Ended up buggering up the right side tie rod end and had to replace that. Put in a greasable unit from NAPA. Intermediate shaft came out with the axle, but I had a spare intermediate shaft to throw in with the new axle. Still trying to get the old intermediate shaft out. Appears to be in good shape, its free, not rusted together, but that clip is definitely keeping it from seperating. Need a way to clamp the intermediate shaft and get some leverage between the clamp and the CV housing. Anyone have any tips? |
