Post subject:  MBRP 3" EXHAUST COMING SOON??? PLEASE REPLY

All,

Although I am new to the forum, I thought I would put this out there. I had recently for many hours researched if anyone makes a turbo back exhaust for out little oil burners to obviously no avail. I contacted MBRP just yesterday and they said they have no plans to develop such an exhaust system because of lack of demand. I told them I thought differently and there is much of a demand and they need to research websites such as ours. So, I guess I am going try and start some of the legwork for them. We all know that there are turbo back systems for all the big three, so without anymore delay.

Who out there would, within the next 2 months, would purchase a 3" turbo back exhaust system if there was a reputable manufacturer out there? Even people on here that are in the Europe and Austrailia markets. If you belong to other website forums, would you be willing to copy this post and put it on the other jeep/liberty/crd type forums and see what kind response there is.

In about a week or two, I am going to forward the numbers to MBRP and see what they think.

Thx,
Corey

With a turbo outlet that is 2 1/2" going with 3" will do little to help.
I ran for months with a boost gauge in my down pipe right behind the turbo.
With the stock muffler and 2 1/8" choke point in the rear CAT flange, I would get up to 5 PSI of back pressure. I got rid of the choke point and stock muffler going 2 1/2" all the way back with the CAT in tact. My back pressure went to 0.0PSI and never budged. I run an Inmotion Stage II tune and the 2 1/2" does the job.
If you follow the simple laws of physics and go through the calculations, as the exhaust cools the volume decreases. In theory, you could reduce the size of the exhaust as it goes from the head pipe to the tail pipe, but that exercise is for those who don't have enough to do.
Some like to tune the exhaust and on naturally aspirated engines that run high RPMs and it helps, with a turbo like in our CRDs, it is a waste of time.
Keep the same size all the way back and you will do all you need to.

Since you have done the research for all of us here, then why not generate enough demand for a 2 1/2" turbo back exhaust if that is all that is needed.

I will not deny all ur findings of whether or not a 3" exhaust is as you say "worth it" or being impractical or pointless. But for the diesel enthusiasts out there, explain to them (on 3/4 and one ton trucks) why it is pointless for them to go from a 3" @ their turbo flange to 6" exhaust and some running twin 12" stacks. Impracticle yes, but many people don't care about practical,, they want custom. For a company like MBRP that sells a full length 4" for a quadcab powerstroke for under $400.00 is well worth it than trying to find someone with a welder and jerryrigging one together themselves.

I kind of find it interesting that 55 people had enough interest to read the post in just a few hours but not say anything that they would be interested. It would seem that if one had enough interest to read the post they would say, yes, I'm interested.

Okay, I'll chime in.

I've read the thread. I'm interested in an exhaust upgrade--but only to a point.

Warp2diesel is 100% correct.

If the outlet from your turbo is only 2 1/2", then a 3" exhaust system will not help with flow. It will CHANGE how your exhaust sounds though; it can give it a deeper sound. BTW, Magnaflow makes a 2 1/2" system.

I suppose that it is all about what you are after. ALOT of the Dodge/Ford/Chevrolet 3/4 and 1 ton owners are after the appearance of a larger system, the bravado factor (Hey I gotta a 40" system, I'm BAD!) While Jeep Liberty CRD owners may also own these other trucks, many don't feel the need to "redneck it up" by adding something that will do little to no good. That and there is only so much room for exhaust piping in our mongrels to start with. I personally do not want to wrestle a 3" down pipe into the already cramped space that is under the hood.

Alot of the Dodge/Ford/Chevrolet owners are also after the smoke factor, as in "I just want it to smoke" without the first care as to making the truck actually go faster. They are called "posers" and many are trying to compensate for some shortcoming in their personality, manhood or self image. If you are really interested and can handle the truth, then ask me how I know!

You can spend as much money as you want on your stuff. Just don't throw rocks at the rest of us if we decide to pass.

For many of us outside the USA it's illegal to get rid of the cat.

:|

But I would be down for a bolt on (NOT WELD ON) to do this:

Simple solution.

Find a welder or exhaust shop who can do the work, the way the economy is, they will appreciate the work. Have them open up the flange on the rear of the CAT to a full 2 1/2". When I posted the test results a few years ago, members came up with a ot of ways to get the job done that all worked, pick one. Cut out the stock muffler with the restricted flow that was designed for a naturally aspirated gasser, not a turbo diesel. Obtain a 2 1/2" Magnaflow Stainless Steel muffler and some 2 1/2" 304 stainless steel straight pipe and have it welded together. Your done.
If you buy the 2 1/2" CAT back system, you will gain little because of the 2 1/8" choke point on the rear CAT flange. With this mod the Acid Heads who run the Enviro Nazi Agencies can't go after you for doing an Aftermarket Exhaust System Fix. With some cops, a 3" exhaust system with a shiny pipe is radar bait, just like flames on the fenders and hood if your not selling fire suppression equipment with the Company Logo on the side too.

More Stainless Steel facts:
The stock system is 304 Stainless Steel, that is why there is surface rust on the systems near ocean coastal areas and those who live in the salt belt where the Gooberments salt the road in the winter. Chlorides are what rusts 304 SS and salt is Sodium Chloride. So if you want it to shine like chrome, you better shell out for 316 SS.
For the 2.8L CRD, the CAT is not a performance robbing device. You would do more for your performance and engine durability by installing an SEGR to keep the exhaust out of your intake.

Any turbocharged engine will benefit from a larger diameter exhaust, and a 3" would be a significant improvement over the factory 2.5". The 2.8 liter diesel engine flows a lot of air, so if people put 2.5" on the little 1.9 liter TDI engine and get benefits, a 3" will certainly help the CRD.

I would not be interested in a 2.5", but I would seriously consider a 3" exhaust. And the catalytic converter needs to be retained.

First and foremost I would like all those who had been adding input to this discussion. Whether it be favorable or someone thinking I was trying to be a know-it-all. There are alot of valid points to be made for each individual proud owner of their CRD. Some have obviously stated they would much rather have a 3" and others seem to think that a 2.5" is sufficient for their mods. To each their own. Some make a valid point to find a shop to have it done for them if you can get a reasonable price. Well, not everyone has immediate access to exhaust pipe (stainless at that). Since exhaust manufacturers offer different sizes for other vehicles, what would be wrong about asking them to make both? The whole point of this thread was just to see if there trully is enough demand for a complete turbo back exhaust.

I just went to magnaflow's website and the part num for the gas version 2.5 exhaust does not exist anymore that that one magazine did an article on. it still needs to be modified to fit the turbo flange

I found it ironically funny that warp2diesel made a comment that there are 100's if not 1000's that would like a bolt on 2.5, or 3" complete exhaust. That was almost verbatim in my email to MBRP. The customer service person didn't seem to think I was correct.

So far 134 people have visited this thread in one day that drew their attention in one way or another, and this is just only one forum. Maybe all of us will be able to benefit from

Supposed to have a cat AND muffler in NY state, went to a dealership for my inspection and they didn't even say anything. i still do have my cat, but in NY the CRD's are emissions exempt, so why keep the cat if they don't care? :juggle:

I would be interested in a 3" turbo back piping kit. I am not interested in paying for a muffler or cat.

It will be an issue if you ever try selling your CRD to an out of state buyer.

Here is how Eurekaboy did his 3" exhaust, mash on the link: http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/tailpipe.htm

I wonder if this resonator would work just as well as the Magnaflow Eurekaboy used ........ the price is right: http://www.amazon.com/Walker-Exhaust-24 ... B0015KTBYU

I'd be interested in a straight pipe version.2.5 or 3.0.Loud pipes save lives. :D
