| Post subject: | Trailer fan wiring |
My CRD has the towing package and 7-pin plug in for trailer lights, etc. The trailer I'll often be pulling has a small 6V exhaust fan I'd like to be able to run off the battery when I'm stopped. Currently it doesn't work when I plug it in. I've done some searching around on this site but haven't found any help so far. Can someone point me in the direction of where the fuses are for this and/or a schematic that would help me figure this out? I've had it done previously on other vehicles and apparently it was quite simple. |

I don't think Pin 4, Aux power is wired or fused, but that is what you would need.

Hmmm, so that means I'd have to run a new line? Would that tie into the 7 pin, connector, maybe in place of the trailer brakes? |

I cannot speak to the 7 pin connector but if you want to run that fan when stopped (be careful not to drain the battery) you will need 1) hot all the time 12 v power and 2) a ground and 3) a switch to turn the fan on/off. I suspect the standard trailer ground will suffice for #2 but you will likely need a new wire for #1. The lazy approach would be to wire the fan directly to a cigarete lighter adapter with an intermediate quick disconnect plug to act as a "switch" and run the fan off the power adapter port in the rear gear compartment assuming you have that port. |

The trailer brake line is already run and can be found under the plastic trim piece next to the drivers left foot. there's a how-to for trailer brakes here somewhere that identifies that line. Mine had a paper label on it. I haven't looked closely at my socket to see if the pin for aux power has a wire coming from it. |

The fan has an electric switch in the trailer, you just reach inside and turn it on. It uses very little juice, we've had it running for 2-3 hrs with negligible battery drain and the vehicle starts just fine, and that's as long as we'd ever need to use it. On my current F150, I just stopped into the local dealership pulling the trailer and they reportedly just switched a fuse and were able to get the fan to work withe vehicle off. Apparently it won't be that simple this time? |
