I have read here of a failed TB in the upper 60K mile range which brought up the question of TB failure with age versus mileage. My 05 has 55K miles on it but is obviously nearing 7 years old.

So, any thoughts that the age of TB is a consideration for changing versus mileage only at 100K miles?

Hmmmmm.....

Right now I'm sticking with the recommendation of 10 years/100k miles.

So for someone like yourself it may be time to do the timing belt in about 2-3 years, where you might be at 80-90k anyways.

Also.....go off of the build date for age....not the model year, when does your door sticker say that yours was built?

All rubber begins to lose something at about 5 years time. It loses moisture, flexibility, and begins to develop tiny cracks that get worse with time. Because of this, nearly all manufacturers recommendations will say something along the line of 5 years "or" 100,000 miles. I've done literally hundreds of timing belts and lots that have failed underneath the recommended mileage interval because of age. I've also seen many in really bad shape that have reached the 9-10 year mark. Just did one the other day on a 2004 Toyota Tacoma V6 that was original and on the verge. Guy just bought the vehicle and asked me to check it out, what might be areas of concern. My first question was if he new if the timing belt had been done. He wanted a tune up and I suggested a tune up was useless if he broke the timing belt. Good thing as it was in bad shape. Now he is good for another 100,000 miles or 6 years. Lots of time to get that tune up.

So, this begs for doing it before 10 years....at say.....8-9 years or 100K...which ever comes first.

As a mechanic who owns my own repair shop, and also a new crd owner, I don't think I would risk pushing a timing belt much past 7 years. Just an unnecessary, and possibly extremely expensive risk IMO.

"When the vehicle manufacturer doesn’t specify a service interval, Gates suggests changing the timing belt at 60,000 miles or every 6 years."

I would suggest the maximum of 100K from Chrysler along with the 6 years that Gates recommends.
