| Post subject: | Lift Pump/Electrical Question |
Does anyone know what kind of amp draw to expect from a Kennedy Diesel lift pump? I followed the installation as described in the CRD tech section (which is excellent, by the way) but keep blowing fuses. That circuit came with a 10 amp, and I tried a 15 amp just in case. I thought I had done a bad job wiring and had a short, but the multimeter only shows continuity to ground (from the relay by the battery) through the pump - that is, if I disconnect the pump's ground wire, continuity goes away. This makes me think the wiring is ok, unless something is getting wet or has to vibrate a certain way to cause the short. Do these pumps need a bigger fuse? I hate to think it's burned up inside already, that would be a real bummer. When I first put it together, it seemed to work fine for about four months. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Let me know if I need to clarify anything. |

Do you still have the packaging (may give rating in amps), or barring that a model or part # for the pump so we can look it up? |

You sure the pump didn't get an internal fault? Known to happen. |

If the 10 (or 15 amp fuse is blowing it is because you are going short to ground. This is not a good thing to do since the pump is in your fuel supple. You should remove the pump until the short is found. It is possible it is internal to the pump, also not a good thing. See if your supplier will replace the pump and try again. |

msilbernagel, I don't have the packaging, but it just came in a brown ups box. It's the pump shown here: http://www.kennedydiesel.com/categoryre ... egory2=126 which, I believe, is what was used in the install described in the tech section. I can't see any electrical listing for it on the website, I'll have to check with the company. WolverineFW - As for the internal fault -that's almost what it looks like at this point, I've just been in denial because that seemed unlikely, and also it's not an easy fix. I was hoping someone on here could say, "oh, yah, you just forgot to ___." And turbobill, there's no fuse in it at all now, so no power in the circuit, so no fire hazard. Looks like my next move is to contact the company and ask for their thoughts. Thanks everybody! |

I found someone else's description of installation in his pickup w/Duramax - he used a 10A fuse for primary pump power. So, if you're blowing fuses @ 10A & 15A you've either got a defective pump or a wiring fault to hunt down. |
