| Post subject: | Glow Plug Problem |
I had my dealer do some 100K mile things like the timing belt and changed the water pump while it was torn down. I also had them put in the new glow plug kit since two of the ceramic ones had died. Here lies the problem. Since they did the work about a month ago my glow plugs don't work. I don't get the short power up test function on the instrument cluster and I certainly don't get them staying coming on at all since it now cranks harder on a cold morning than it did with two working. I have had it back in at the dealer and they have done all the tests on the kit and everything test correctly except the momentary cluster light does not illuminate and of course the glow plugs never turn on. They tested the cluster light and it works. I did a quick forum search and find nothing nor have I found anything on a general web search. Any ideas? |

Bear with me but just to be sure invoke the cluster test your self by holding the trip odometer button while turning the ignition on which will cycle through all bulbs and gauges to confirm that the glow plug light comes on. I assume that you are aware during a normal startup, even when moderately cold, the glow plug light bearly does more than blink on and off so quickly that I rarely even notice it. The most obvious possibility is they either turned the vehicle on with the new OEM 5v glow plugs installed before flashing the ECU or they never flashed the ECU for those glow plugs. In either case they would have been supplied with 7v and likely burned out almost immediately. There are tests that can be performed on the glow plugs themselves to see if they are ok but others will have to weigh in with how. If the plugs test fine then the next question is are they getting power which can also be tested. An even more obvious check is whether or not a fuse or relay was/is blown. If so it would seem to me that would kill the cluster light and prevent the plugs from getting power. |

Thanks for the input Papa. I have not tested the cluster but the dealership did today and it is working. They also tested the glow plug circuit and the plugs and all are operating to factory standards. They did reprogram the ECU originally and they had a problem with that, they thought they had blown it and had to start over but they recovered it. Since the install I have had a number of cold mornings at or below freezing and it is obvious that the light never comes on and from the start up that it is cranking harder than before when two of the ceramic plugs were still working. |

I don't think they flashed the ecu...... they didn't flash mine on my previous CRD. They said it didn't need it. Had GDE update it for me instead. BUt if you are in a warm climate, the glow plugs should have little to do with slow start ups. |
