Post subject:  The uneducated amuse me!
Over the last few weeks I have been told several interesting things pertaining to my Jeep. I was informed I need to have me Jeep checked out because the person said it sounded like it was knocking. I have been asked if I would like to borrow a quart of oil because it sounded like I needed it. When fueling up I had a guy as why I was putting diesel in my Jeep. I was also asked if I was sure I wanted to put diesel in my Jeep. Just thought I would share these and see what kind of questions yall get asked.

Yes. I actually had some dope clerk at a filling station tell me I was a diesel pump over the loudspeaker system and wouldn't turn on the pump :shock: until I went in and assured him that my Jeep was a diesel. :roll:

I have a biodiesel magnet on the rear gate. I have had a triple A tow truck operator and a soccer mom ( at Whole Foods) ask me why I had that magnet on a Jeep Liberty. Mind you these are separate occasions. When I told them. That the Jeep was diesel, they both looked at me like they felt sorry for me,and said, " No it isn't".

Of course, after I schooled them, they fell in line with all of the other responses, which is typically, "Really? Wow. Didnt even know that Jeep made a diesel. That's cool!"

I've had a few truckers stand and stare at me when I get out of my Jeep at the diesel pumps and start to fill up. I can only imagine what is going through their heads. Our little CRD's look pretty funny lined up between a few big rigs.

A couple of weeks ago while I had mine at the dealership getting the rear control arm recall stuff done, the guy from the service desk called me over to tell me that I'd almost run it out of oil and why hadn't I noticed the oil light was on. I explained that I simply had a bad oil pressure sensor and that I'd been watching it and that I keep the oil level just above minimum on purpose. But he was adamant that I let them change the oil since the mechanic said "there's barely any oil on the dipstick". I again calmly explained that I really do run with the oil just barely above the min mark. He persisted so I asked if I could check it. He said "sure, as soon as they get it off the lift". Twenty minutes later he drove my Jeep out front and tossed me the keys and didn't say anything more about the oil. I checked it a half-hour later in a parking lot of a nearby store, and I'm sure you can guess the results. Apparently the service guys and I have slightly different definitions of "barely any oil on the dipstick".

Did they ignore you and add any? I wouldn't trust ANY dealer tech to properly diagnose the oil level or refill it... They would probably use Coca Cola to top it off. After all, that is brown too, right? :banghead:

I don't get the problems at the fuel stations that often, probably b/c I'm filling up at truck stops or a few stations in my area that know me.
What I *do* like is that I have a nice big "Powered by BIODIESEL" sticker at the top of my rear window, and I have yet to be bothered while driving in an HOV lane... B/c "alternative fuel" vehicles are allowed.

As for getting funny looks from truckers while I'm in their high-flow fuel lanes (I have my filler neck opened up so that nozzle fits just fine)... I think they are more accepting when I drive in like this:

Reminds me of when "The uneducated" feel the need to tell me and my wife, that our pedegree, KC registered, Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a Pitbull, and as a banned breed in this country should be destroyed!!!! :evil:

Sorry dude, but your thread really reminded me of the sort of ignorance over here that is getting innocent dogs put to sleep :cry:

Back on topic, I do find it funny that diesel 4x4's are that rare over there :lol: on the flip side, I used to get smug looks at the petrol station's when I had my offroad prepped XJ, and onlookers had .. "I'm gettin 50 to the gallon outa mine" written all over their face :roll: :goink:

I've never gotten the comments about being out of oil because it sounds like it's knocking, but it seems to me the appropriate response would be "yeah, hey, sounds pretty quiet for a diesel, doesn't it? I can't believe I get 30 (now 35, thank you GDE) MPG out of a 4300 lb truck with the aerodynamics of a brick."

I have had Cummins and Duramax (diesel pickup trucks that SOUND very diesel) at the next pump question if my Libby was really diesel, and remark on how quiet it is. That always brings about quite a discussion on how great diesels are, theirs and mine as well.

I have had store clerks poke their heads out the door to point out that I was at a diesel pump, and I had one rather cranky gas station attendant insist I pull up to a gas pump instead of blocking his diesel pump, and after I pointed out that mine was a diesel, he snapped "no it isn't, now pull up!" Of course, I got back in, fired it up, and drove away leaving him in a (small) cloud of smoke holding the gas nozzle. And drove across the street to fill up.

Very funny stories, I've had lots of people stare and I'm guessing that they are thinking the same thing. Only one person came up to me, it was a guy with a work truck and his boss with a TDI paying for the pump. They were surprised to see me grab the green handle and they watched me closely, but once they walked around to see the green cap hanging on the side, the boss said something to the effect of being surprised it was a diesel and how cool that is and why dont they make more of them.

Speaking of convenience store clerks, I had one come out to me--in ~30 degree (F) weather and tell me that I was at the diesel pump. I pointed to the label on the inside of the cover and read it to him "Diesel Fuel Only" His response: "Oh, I did not know that they put a diesel engine in the Liberty." He went further to say that many people pull up to the diesel pump thinking that it is the Unleaded. He went back inside. I have returned several times since and not a word from him about "being at the wrong pump." At least he has a good memory!

What is the reasoning for running the CRD at the fill line on the dipstick?

You don't want to overfill on oil as the excess just exits into the turbo and CAC hoses via the CCV. That said the proper fill level is not totallly consistent between vehicles and the drain down time on the CRD engine is rather long given the small oil passages. Full fill, according to my notes, 6.3 qts on a stock oil filter and 7 qts on an over size filter. Exactly where that sits on you dipstick on level ground sort of depend on how long you wait for drain down.

Bottom line is any shop that simply pour oil in until the dipstick reads full or anyone who reads and adds oil based on the dipstick reading after just a few minutes of drain down will be overfilling.

I'm personally not at all sure where the reading on the dipstick should be. I've put in precisely the right amount and depending on how long the vehicle sits the reading is either low or way overfull. So the way I've tended to operate is if I've got oil at or preferably above the add line after fueling I'm ok.
