dang, and I was hoping you'd be the one . . . to escape this issue.

I've had CEL on and off for those very reasons for 4,000 miles, on my third EGR no less, and just turned 10,000 miles over the weekend. Sooner or later DC has to figure this one out. Fortunately, I've had no performance issues, although not sure what effect it might be having on my mileage.

In any case, fingers crossed that the latest parts you are sure to get solve the problem. Permanently.

Dang. I'm rolling up on 20,000 miles this week and I was still thinking my CRD was going to be EGR problem free. But then guys like you come in here with more miles than me and EGR failure. :x Oh well... we'll see how she does... :?

Do you guys have your ECU's flashed with the new code for the CRD's?

In reference to omniphil's question, check the thread "EGR Replacement versus Build Date?". When they replace the EGR, they're supposed to perform an additional TSB, to reprogram the ECM, 18-018-05, if it hasn't been performed already, and is supposed to be performed on all CRD's with a build date prior to May 15 '05 first time they come in for service.

Have seen a couple reports on another forum from people who said their dealers reported that so far the only CRD's that have required EGR replacement had build dates prior to May '05.

If they performed this TSB, there should be a vehicle modification sticker with the pertinent info under the hood.

If this plays out, it could mean that if your CRD has a build date after May'05, you might be in the clear as far as the EGR going south.

I'm at 22,000+ without a problem yet, but I'm anxiously awaiting the failure.

IMy CRD was built on May 2, 2005 and I took delivery several days later. At 586 miles I had the engine light come on and the CRD died. I was able to restart it but if I went over 20 mph, it would die. It was in in Limp-in-Mode. The dealer did the 18-018-05 TSB and it has been fine since.

I still have my original EGR valve at 8300 miles. I run cetane improver and a good detergent in my CRD and the results have been quite favorable. No driveability issues.

Just under 12,000 miles and I got the P0401...

Time to call the dealer...

In regards to EGR failures, when referring to fault codes and build dates are people referring to the throttle body PN#5142799AA which is described on the repair work order as EGR flow valve.
Mine has a build date of 7-06 and have had the flow valve body replaced twice within 4000 miles. The first time was that it continued to cycle upon startup and shutdown. At shutdown it hummed for approx 5-10 seconds and no fault code was shown. The second time was at the TSB upgrade. Or is the part of concern the actual EGR located at the turbo charger. If thats the case I haven't had that replaced. If I've missed somthing and that this has been addressed as far as part numbers and descriptions please let me know. So, is it PN# 5142799AA that is the culprit that everyone is talking about and if so a good CCV should remedy the problem. I sense enough knowledge in here that someone can clear this up for me and maybe anyone else who may have some question. Thanks

I have been try to track this on another thread, but so far the PN#5142799AA or EGR flow control valve is being replaced more than twice as much as the 5166555AB - the actual EGR valve. For anybody who has had EGR parts replaced, please post part numbers at "Other than part 5142799AA what EGR parts are replaced?" I do think an open vent or filter will help with the 5142799AA, but I think some have had failures even with a CCV filter?

Naturist,

How many miles on your rig was while using biodiesel? The reason I'm asking is that there are a lot of people thinking that ULSD will solve all of these problems. B100 should have no sulphur in so I'm just curious.

Post subject:  CEL has been off for a few days.

After having the CEL on for a week or so and having both the EGR and Flow Control Valve replaced, my light is finally off and the CRD is running well. My first dealer started inquiring about my Biodiesel sticker and claiming I had contaminated fuel etc when they couldn't get the light to stay off. I checked fresh fuel and it looked nearly the same as out of my fuel filter. I could tell they were stumped and had little experience with the CRD. I went to another dealer and spoke directly with their diesel guy. He said DC is having problems with this engine (EGR mostly) and he's still not sure what's up, but when he found out I had a K&N filter he said I should put the factory one back and drive around a while. I did so and later that day the CEL went off. Who knows if that was the only problem but it's working now.

I am not Naturist, but that has never stoppped me from replying before. :)

I have not had my EGR replaced yet - but this week I did get my first EGR related trouble code, "P0401: EGR Flow Insufficient".

My CRD has never had less than B20 except for however much they fill it with B5 from the factory.

I bought it in May of last year, and my first two tanks were B20, then I switched to B99 for the whole summer until November. Then I switched to B50 for a month, then to B20 for the winter. This spring, in March I switched back to B50, and mid April to B99 again - which I am using now.

I also use PowerService (white bottle) cetane booster / anti-gel for the portion of my blend that is diesel #2 when I do blend... If that is worth mentioning...

I think the that is the code that threw them for a loop and they called tec and it was a MAF sensor that was bad shortly after we bought the truck. The reason I say this is the code wasn't in the FSM and they called STAR Net for help, seems they had not gotten all the codes changed in their system. I think it was a code for a gasser EGR problem before the change they have been doing for CAN-C II code system.

Reggie, the answer to your question is "all of them." When I picked it up from the dealer, it had 13 miles on it, and appeared to have 3 gallons of 5% biodiesel from the factory, along with 3 gallons of petro-diesel. I filled on up with biodiesel blend, and until I got it home from the last repair, it had never had straight petro-diesel in it, save for once, after the second repair, when I ran 2 tanks of straight petro, which made no difference, either in the continuous check-engine light, or in the codes it was throwing.

It finally happened to me, also. At 18,000+ miles the check engine light came on. I removed the Provent and took the Jeep into the dealer. Surprise, the EGR valve needs replacing and they have to order it. I had them do the reflash while it was in. I was bragging earlier that my dealer sold 6 CRDs, and mine was the only one that didn't need the EGR valve replaced. So what happened? I've had the Provent since 5,000 miles and its been doing a great job.

Did they tell you what part number they had ordered?

Since the Provent doesn't stop SOOT my guess is the dreaded soot build up got the EGR, that or they are not made worth crap. That's if it was EGR and not Flow Control Valve.

Oldnavy - the dealer said it coded for the egr valve, they did not mention the flow control valve. Goglio - they did not tell me the part number, is it important to ask?
