I have a friend that uses jp-5 jet fuel mixed with 2 quarts of motor oil in his VW diesel car. He gets 60 mpg with this mixture. What is the opinion of anyone who knows about this?

I'm digging deep into my memory bank here so I may have some of the details a little wrong.

JP-5 is used in US Navy planes. It has a higher flash point than other JPs, better for spills and crashes on the carrier deck. It's energy content is higher than other JPs and weighs a little more per gallon. IIRC the freezing point is -40C. I think it has Prist added which is an anti gel-/anti microbial. Maybe I have it backwards and it doesn't have it. All jet fuel has the paraffins refined out, hence the low freezing point. It also has almost no lubricity. I don't think there is a civilian equal to JP-5. Jet A is the same as JP-8. JP-4 is thinned with avgas or some nasty volatiles(benzene?), it's not produced any more as far as I know. It's main attribute is an extremely low freezing point, -65C I think.

I know that the range of the plane I flew was 100 miles more on JP-5 so it is quite possible that he is getting good mileage with it. I would use it in an old school VW or Mercedes but I'll let others try it for awhile before I would put it in a CRD.

When I was in the Army(worked on heavy wheeled eqiupment) we filled all equipment with JP-8 or JP-5. I can't remember which, it's been awhile. I always thought it was funny filling humvee's with it. It is perfectly clear and smells nothing like diesel. Everything we ran(tanks, humvees, various 2-5 ton trucks) used it with no problems.

We used JP-5 in the Coast Guard on our ships that had gas tubines and diesel engines in the same engineroom. The injectors and fuel pumps in the diesels didn't last near as long as they did in the all diesel ships. Putting lube oil in the fuel is very old school and doesn't help much. If it's used lube oil he's a train wreck waitng to happen on many levels. That was tried also even in oil burners, just what everyone needs vaporized metals in their environment. Toxicology tests to follow.
